A very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 236pp. The story of the Laconia, a cruise ship requisitioned as a troop carrier in the Second World War which was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1942 with the loss of almost 2,000 lives, many being Italian prisoners of war. Attempts were made to rescue as many as possible by other U-Boats, an Italian submarine and three French warships until Admiral Donitz forbade his submarines to attempt any more rescues. Illustrated. .

First published in the US in the previous year with the title 'Twenty Million Tons under the Sea'. The author was head of the US task force that captured U-505 off the coast of Africa, the only U-boat to be boarded and captured at sea. From 1943-44 he was based at NILE (Alexandria) and finally Piraeus during the liberation and civil war. VERY SCARCE.
