From the author's Foreword: "In writing the history of the territory now known as Hillside Township and vicinity it has been necessary in the beginning to go into the history of the early settlements of both Elizabethtown and Newark so that the reader may have a proper perspective on the subject. It has also been necessary later in the text to go into the history of territory now included in Union Township Newark and Elizabeth as the territory treated upon was considered a part of the community now known as Hillside Township in the early days. I have in the short space allotted me made an effort to blend with the story the background which helped to bring about certain conditions and events the economical reasons and the trend of thought existent at the time."
