Hardcover bound in green cloth with titles in gilt. The binding is rubbed and bumped. The spine is browned and shows heavier rubbing. Rear inner hinge is cracking. Text block is a bit toned but is sound and generally clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf "For My Beloved Friend and Grand Commander V. D. U.C.V. / Captain William C. Whittle C.S.A. one of the noblest Southern heroes of the High Seas and purest gentlemen of Virginia's Homes / From the Author". Note: Signed as "The Author" and without using Stewart's name; the book is NOT signed by Whittle. William H. Stewart 1838-1912 enlisted as a Captain in the C.S.A. in Norfolk Virginia in 1861 and was part of the Jackson Greys. He was wounded at Chancellorsville 1863 Spotsylvania Court House 1864; and Cold Harbor 1864. He was with the 61st Virginia Infantry when he was surrendered at Appomattox on April 9 1865. William Conway Whittle II 1840-1920 a native of Norfolk Virginia was an officer with the Confederate States Navy. He served on the river near Yorktown as well as on several Confederate naval vessels including the C.S.S. Nashville as 3rd Lieutenant and the C.S.S. Louisiana an Ironclad sailing on the lower Mississippi. The Louisiana was lost in battle with Federal forces near New Orleans and Whittle was captured and taken to Boston as a prisoner. He was exchanged in August 1862 and returned to service taking command of the gunboat CSS Chattahoochie as 1st Lieutenant. He was later chosen to run blockades to get correspondence to Confederate commissioners in Europe. In spring of 1864 he was in Paris with other Confederate officers. His last service was on the infamous C.S.S. Shenandoah which he joined in October 1864 as an Executive Officer. He was onboard the Shenandoah as the ship made its way across the northern Pacific in 1865 attacking American whaling vessels and sinking 29 ships in 12 weeks not knowing that the Civil War had ended. In fact the last shot of the Civil War was fired from the Shenandoah. The ship surrendered at Liverpool on November 6 1865. Whittle and others made their way to Argentina and a couple years later he returned to his home in Norfolk where he went to work with the Old Bay Line as a Captain. The United Confederate Veterans UCV was formed in 1889 and Whittle was a member. Stewart's inscription to him as "Grand Commander V.D. U.C.V." likely suggests that he was Grand Commander of the Virginia District. He should not be confused with his father also William Conway Whittle 1806-1878 who was also a Captain in the Confederate Navy but who died before the U.C.V. was formed. <br/> <br/> The Neale Publishing Company hardcover

The cover depicts a campus building festooned in what appears to be ivy and is followed by 16 pages of photo-gravures of campus buildings including the Carnegie Library now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The State Normal School was established in 1891 by the Georgia General Assembly to train Georgians to be teachers in rural areas. In World War II the campus was used by the U. S. Army as a training site. After the war the school was used by women students attending the university. In 1953 the site was purchased by the U. S. Navy as a permanent location for its Supply Corps School. This booklet appears to have been published in the 1920s or thereabouts. Attractive clean with minor signs of wear. ; .
