Tan stiff wraps lettered/illus. in brown. Extended cover edges show typical rubbing otherwise only light shelf wear. 108 pp. 2 tipped-in portraits. Interior shows several neat corrections in ink that seem original to issue also several penciled corrections/additions that appear to have been added later by the original owner. Ownership inscription on front flyleaf states that this copy was given to Hannah Avis James at Avis family reunion at Alcyon Park Pitman New Jersey on 10 Sept. 1927 two months after its original publication. Many representatives of the Avis family originally settled in the Moravian communities in and around Bethlehem and Northampton County Pennsylvania as well as sections of New Jersey. Hannum 1915-2007 was a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1991. Leo H. McKay was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Mercer County Pa. from 1954 to 1968. In this book he discusses 12 trials of particular interest during his time on that bench. Scarce. Book is in Very Good Condition: provenance-related items described above; underlining in preliminary pages; otherwise clean and tight. McCulley was the author of hundreds of stories for the pulps fifty novels numerous screenplays for film and television and the creator of the character Zorro. McCulley's Zorro character reminiscent of Baroness Orczy's Scarlet Pimpernel became his most enduring character. Aside from Zorro McCulley created many other pulp characters including Black Star The Spider The Mongoose and Thubway Tham. Many of McCulley's characters -- The Green Ghost The Thunderbolt and The Crimson Clown -- were inspirations for the masked heroes that have appeared in popular culture from McCulley's time to the present day. Frontispiece is an elevation of the garden front of a stable of Fairman Rogers Philadelphia. First edition. The author Robert McClure was a veterinarian from Scotland who settled in Philadelphia and taught at the first veterinary institution in the United States the Veterinary College of Philadelphia. That institution received a charter from the Pennsylvania legislature in 1852 although its founders struggled for some years to establish a school which ceased to exist after 1866. In 1877 McClure was convicted of selling diplomas from the now defunct veterinary college for which he was fined $200 and imprisoned for nine months.
