The St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia was established in 1747 by Pennsylvanians of Scottish descent to assist Scottish immigrants to Pennsylvania. Still active it is the oldest charitable organization in continuous existence in North America. This copy was annotated and corrected by Robert Burns Beath 1839-1914 president of the society when this volume was published. Beath served with the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Civil War and as the Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1883 and 1884. The printed erratum notice is from Beath and explains that a corrected replacement page for p. 47 had been issued. This notice includes a handwritten initialed note by Beach explaining that this copy includes both pages "to show the errors in the first copy." Beath also made corrections and additions to the text. There is also a replacement plate loose of Gen. William Macpherson for whom a portrait of Major John Macpherson had been used in error as noted by Beath on the erroneous plate. The majority of the plates are portraits. No statement of limitation.
