The unidentified proprietor of the dancing school listed the students by class: Ladies Evening Class 56 students; Gentleman's Evening Class 56 students; Ladies Afternoon 44 students; Private Waltzing Lessons 17 students; and Children's Class 23 students. The 196 students are listed presumably by the date they joined the class with street addresses for each. Dated March 27th 1865 at the Rooms of the Y.M.C.A. in Washington D.C. this document reads as follows: <br /> ____________<br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directress of said hospital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. It was the primary receiving point for Union soldiers wounded in the eastern theatres of the war as well as those being returned from Confederate prisons such as Libby and Andersonville. The former prisoners were in shockingly poor health due to the conditions in which they were held with many dying on the transports to Annapolis and those who survived needing much attention. Cambridge authorizes James Macmanus Esq. to appear on his behalf. Witnessed by Andrew Curtin. Signed on the reverse by James Gilliland prothonotary and Samuel Milliken. James Macmanus was an attorney in Centre County Pa. Peter Cambridge had a general store in Bellefonte Centre Co. Andrew Curtin 1815-1894 was from Bellefonte Pa. and was a lawyer before serving as governor of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1867; he later served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as U.S. Ambassador to Russia. James Gilliland 1804-1889 was prothonotary of Centre Co. from 1831 to 1836. During the Civil War Gov. Curtin appointed Gilliland commissary and quartermaster of the 1st Regiment of Pennsylvania Veterans; later he was transferred to Washington as assistant agent for Pennsylvania. On 25 March 1814 Margaret Cauffman of Philadelphia gentlewoman sold to Isaac Overholtzer of Norriton Township Montgomery County for $650 a lot of woodland of almost 5 acres in Providence Township Montgomery Co. on the road leading from the Germantown and Perkiomen turnpike and on the Norristown Road. Signed by Margaret Cauffman; witnesses Sarah A. Cauffman Catharine Wiseman and Alexander J. Uhlyn; and Delaware County Judge Mark Willcox. Mark Willcox 1743-1827 was the son of Thomas Willcox 1689-1779 the founder of Ivy Mills which produced the paper used for early currency of the United States. He continued to run the paper mill after his father's death in 1779; he also served as an associate judge for Delaware County from 1791 to 1823. His second wife was Anna Mary Cauffman a sister of Margaret Cauffman. In Near Fine Condition; 1 x 10 cm. section lacking at lower left-hand corner with minor loss of writing; otherwise clean and bright. unknown
17760087821776. Near Fine -. 1 handwritten document of 4 pages 39 x 25 cm. folded. On 12 Dec. 1776 William Rowan of Fawn Township York Co. Pa. yeoman mortgaged 245 acres in Fawn Township to Beulah Paschall of the city of Philadelphia spinster for 300 pounds of Pennsylvania due by 12 Dec. 1783 with interest paid yearly. Signed by William Rowan; witnesses Peter Miller and Abraham Shoemaker; Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice Thomas Willing; and York County Recorder Samuel Johnston. Embossed paper stamp of Pennsylvania. The mortgagee was Beulah Paschall 1732-1793 a Philadelphia Quaker and owner of Cedar Grove. Thomas Willing 1731-1821 was a highly successful merchant and real estate developer as well as a Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice from 1767 to 1776. He served as the first president of both the Bank of North America and the Bank of the United States and supported the American Revolution. York County Recorder Samuel Johnston on the other hand had come to York County from England as an official representative of the Penn family. He held a variety of county offices at various times in addition to that of recorder of deeds: clerk of courts prothonotary and register of wills. When he refused to take the oaths of allegiance to Pennsylvania during the Revolution he had to relinquish all public offices. However he did not opposed the Revolution. Two of his sons-in-law served as colonels in the American militia and two of his sons were privates. By 1786 Johnston lived in Maryland and was admitted as an attorny in Baltimore County.
