Mai nella storia il Mediterraneo e le terre che su esso si affacciano si trovarono a costituire un'unità politica, se non sotto l'autorità di Roma, durante i primi quattro secoli dopo Cristo. Il mare è una fonte di profitti infiniti per colui che sa dominarlo e mettersi in relazione con mondi stranieri: il Mediterraneo era così il centro dell'impero più grande e duraturo dell'Occidente, il collegamento tra Paesi più differenti allora di quanto forse non siano oggi. Questo libro ci porta in un lungo viaggio tra le sponde di un mare interno che unisce Oriente e Occidente, l'Europa e l'Africa. Alessandria, Rodi, Pozzuoli, Roma, Arles, Cartagine, Leptis Magna: sono tutte le fermate a cui attraccare, esplorando un mondo perduto ma in parte restituito, grazie alle magnifiche illustrazioni realizzate alla luce degli studi archeologici e storico-artistici. La lettura sarà dunque guidata dalla scia delle migliaia di barche che solcarono costantemente vaste distese d'acqua per il trasporto di grano, olio, vino con cui rifornire le principali città del mondo romano, mentre le flotte militari assicuravano la pace sul Mediterraneo, il mare che consentì ai romani di regnare sul mondo. Mare nostrum, "è il nostro mare", dissero.
