174 pages. "Bill Reid's Spirit of Haida Gwaii is no ordinary sculpture. Commissioned for the courtyard of the new Canadian chancery in Washington, D.C., it sits directly across from the National Gallery and is destined to become one of the major artistic landmarks of the capital and of the North American continent... Ulli Stelzer's photographs, taken over five years, record the genesis and development of the Black Canoe and of each creature within it. This sequence of nearly one hundred images offers detailed insight into the final form and reveals many aspects of the sculpture otherwise lost forever to view." - from dust jacket. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is an illuminating paper by Professor Bouwer who took with him a group of students to study the most interesting islands in the East Indies, the archipelago located at the intersection of two great zones of crustal weakness of the earth. Some of the islands studied included the Wetar, Lirang, Alor, and Lomblen and also the volcanic islands of Adonara, Solor, and the eastern part of Flores. In the eastern part the mountain-building processes are still active, while the portion to the west of Makassar Strait has long been more or less stable, except where it borders upon the Indian Ocean. Among subjects discussed include morphological features of the islands, geological composition and structure, the rate and direction of movement of the earth's crust, geographic distribution of volcanoes and evolution of volcanic activity, Accompanied by 2 full-page colour maps, one of which shows active and extinct volcanoes, also included are amazing photographic images depicting native house at Kaslio and market at Kefamenanoe in Timor.

Consists of two unpaginated parts bound in one cirlox-bound volume. Part 1 consists of 100 one-sided pages encompassing the textual component of the report, supplemented with occasional diagrams of roundhouse layouts and photocopies of photos. The report is divided into: Introduction; The Building, its Elements, Materials and Construction; Roundhouse Memorabilia; and Conclusions, plus a bibliography. The heart of the report lies in the Memorabilia section which provides historical and diagrammatic information about the roundhouses at North Bend, Revelstoke, Field, Cranbrook, Nelson, Trail, Penticton, Coquitlam, Vancouver, and Victoria. Part 2 consists of approximately 75 one-sided pages of black and white photocopied reproductions of photos of roundhouses from across British Columbia. Average wear. Unmarked. A sound copy. Presumably most, if not all, the roundhouses documented here have since been demolished, thus this report, prepared by students of the UBC School of Architecture, serves as an important historical and architectural record.
