Organized by the War department under the direction of Jefferson Davis who was Secretary of War at that time a collection of volumes was produced in the quest for the best route for a railroad to the West. Jefferson Davis wrote part of the introduction to this series and outlines the goals of the project. This report is on routes explored in Northern California and Oregon. Specifically the expedition was to look for a railroad route crossing the Sierra Nevada near the source of the Carson River and to see if it was feasible to connect the Sacramento valley with the Oregon Territory. Most of the color plates in this volume are located in the first three parts of the publication which is focused on topography geology and botanical subjects. Photos clean many with manuscript captions. Good plus. Photo album of assembled snapshots showing various parts of Japan the Philippines Alaska Hawaii and Washington State. The two larger images are of Snoqualmie Falls in Washington the first showing the park area and the second showing the falls itself. The images appear to be in no particular order with scenes from all the various locales dispersed throughout the album. Other photographs show scenes in Manila including the "oldest church" a "Spanish transport sunk by Dewey" in the Spanish-American War Fort Malata other churches some water buffalo and other rural scenes in the area. Images of Honolulu include a group of school children the palace views in a park and some rural scenes including a waterfall. Images of Japan are primarily from Nagasaki Kobe and Osaka. They include views of the harbors and ships the dry dock at Nagasaki the lower and upper falls at Kobe Japanese peddlers aboard a ship "temple 2000 years old" at Nagasaki among others. Views of Alaska are primarily taken from off the coast showing Dutch Harbor from several angles. <br> <br> The transport ship Oopack is featured in several photos; the Oopack was a British merchant vessel that was sunk by the Germans in 1918 off the coast of Malta. Several unlabeled photos at the rear of the volume show what are presumably local scenes from home likely the Pacific Northwest. There are two farmers plowing a field behind a horse bathers at the seashore picnickers and other group photos. The company founders had acquired the right to transport mail under contract from the United States Government from the Isthmus of Panama to California. The company initially believed it would be transporting agricultural goods from the West Coast but just as operations began gold was discovered in California and business boomed almost from the start. During the California Gold Rush in 1849 the company was a key mover of goods and people and played a key role in the growth of San Francisco California. In 1867 the company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco Hong Kong and Yokohama and extended service to Shanghai. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants bringing additional cultural diversity to California. A rare survivor from the era documenting the firm's Far East routes. unknown books

Long decorated strip of tapa a cloth made from tree bark by native people in the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Though previously used as cloth for clothing by native peoples today tapa is worn primarily on ceremonial occasions and is prized as artwork in the Western world. Blue and white photographic image of Lindbergh. 17-1/2" x 6" <br/><br/>Colonel Charles Lindbergh made the 3600 mile trip from New York to Paris in 1927 and won instant fame as the first person in history to be in New York one day and Paris the next. From the beginning Lindbergh's fame and success introduced chaos and tragedy into the pilot's life. A very private family the Lindberghs were devastated at the kidnapping and murder of their oldest child Charles Jr. at just 2 years old. So grand was the trial that the pilot and his wife exiled themselves to England the year that the murderer was put to death. Though he steadfastly denounced "womanizing" in other pilots and men decades after his death it was found that the famous "Lone Eagle" had fathered 7 children out of wedlock with three European mistresses. As public as his private life now is the man was notoriously outspoken as an advocate of keeping the US out of world conflict as the country formally entered WWII. Nevertheless the pilot strongly supported the war effort after the attack on Pearl Harbor and flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Lindbergh had many talents aviation being just one of them. The pilot designed a watch that would make navigation easier for pilots after his transatlantic adventure. He was also a bestselling author after his novel "WE" was introduced to the public in 1927 the same year of the flight. a very busy man and was an instant hit. In 1930 Lindbergh invented a perfusion pump known as the "Model T" to make heart surgeries possible. He strongly advocated developments in science and aviation. However he lost much of his popularity during the beginning of WWII when denouncing the United States' involvement in the war - much of his speeches being deemed anti-Semitic. This belief was not without some sound reasoning as even in his diary the pilot states that we must limit our Jewish influence. that it was too bad about a high level of Jewish percentage in the total population as reactions "invariably occur" because "a few Jews of the right type are I believe an asset to any country". Charles Lindbergh died of lymphoma in Maui in August of 1974. A few statements in regards to the publisher of this welcoming broadside - as a privately owned mass transit system Pacific Electric was probably one of the best-known and most extensive systems in the United States. This Southern California company consisted of streetcars light rail and buses - and was the largest electric railway system in the world by the 1920s. The railroad itself was created in 1901 by Henry Huntington a Vice-President of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Huntington wanted to consolidate travel in Southern California by creating a universal bus rail and trolley system where tickets could be interchangeable and therefore travel less hectic. This handbill advertises Charles Lindbergh's visit to Los Angeles on September 20 1927 as part of his 48-state tour of the country following his historic cross-Atlantic flight. The broadside includes a list of "reduced fares" to Los Angeles; information regarding the parade downtown as well as the Public Reception at the Los Angeles Coliseum at 3:30pm. 2 institutional holdings located on OCLC University of Southern CA & Yale.
