Heliotype promoting the Union Pacific line with a view of the tracks crossing Sherman Hill and the Continental Divide outside of the now ghost town of Sherman Wyoming. Sherman Hill is one of the landmarks on the transcontinental railroad and the highest point on the original U.P. line with a summit topping of 8247 feet above sea level. This printed circular is titled â€œTransfer Office of the Southern Pacific Rail-Road Company / No. 54 Wall-Street / New York May 30 1857.â€ It is addressed to W. P. Mehville Wilne Esq. of Sandusky Ohio and franked with an imperforate Franklin stamp Scott #9 canceled by a black circular New York postmark. In nice shape with a tiny bit of soiling to the edges. The notice reads in part: â€œAn installment of fifty cents a share will become due and payable on the three percent. Stock held by you in the Company on the first Monday of July next. . . Stock on which said instalment shall not be paid will be sold at auction in conformity with . . . the Charter. . . â€œAbout sixteen miles of our â€˜Roadâ€™ are now graded and nearly furnished with cross-ties â€“ twenty-four hundred and seventy-eight tons of rail-road iron have been bought and paid for and sent up Red River â€“ sufficient to finish twenty-five miles of road.â€ . The Southern Pacific Rail-Road referenced in this document is not the much more famous transcontinental route. This railroad was founded on 16 February 1852 officially as the Vicksburg and El Paso Railroad although throughout the document it was referred to as the Texas Western Railroad. It was later bought by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad for $600000. It was later acquired by Texas interests and its named officially changed to the Southern Pacific Railroad the predecessor of the Texas and Pacific Railway. It was never associated with the later and more famous transcontinental Southern Pacific. During 1857 the railroad laid 23 miles of track between Marshall and Swansonâ€™s Landing on Caddo Creek. During the Civil War the line was connected to Shreveport Louisiana. In 1872 it was sold to the Texas Pacific Railroad Company which in 1976 merged with the Missouri Pacific Railroad. For more information see Wernerâ€™s â€œHistory of the Texas Western Railroad Companiesâ€ and â€œHistory of the Texas and Pacific Railway Companyâ€ both at the Texas State Historical Association website. Scarce. At the time of listing no other documents from this Southern Pacific Railroad are for sale in the trade. Although no other 1857 circulars documenting the construction of the first 16 miles of its track have been sold at auction other materials related to it have. OCLC shows no materials related to this Southern Pacific Railroad are held by institutions however it is possible there may some within the Texas & Pacific Railway Collection at the University of North Texas. . unknown

The rear wrap is partially detached. The wraps have perhaps been discreetly glued to the spine. There are numerous losses from the paper of the spine and there are also some small losses from the edges of the wraps. In addition there are several short closed tears in the edges of the wraps. There are several very light moisture stains on the front wrap and there is a thin 1 and 1/4 inch tall light moisture stain on the fore edge of the rear wrap. First Edition of what became the standard scholarly reference for New Testament Greek for the better part of the 19th century. 920pp. 4to half sheepskin leather over marbled boards marbled endpapers speckled edges. Some modest rubbing to the extremities spine a bit parched and cracking as usual with sheep tidemark to top edge of the first few pages typical age spotting otherwise a very clean sound copy. With multiple provenance inscriptions to the front matter notably for this Oregonian cataloger one 'F. W. Cathey' which is Rev. Frankly Warren Cathey b. Gresham 1863 d. Seattle 1941. Loosely tucked in between pp. 12 adn 13 is a notice of a meeting led by A. C. Scott. Both men were Methodist ministers in Oregon. Edward Robinson was one of the most prominent English-speaking Biblical Scholars in the 19th century holding professorships first at Andover-Newton and later Union Theological Seminary. 'His most important fruit . was the preparation of an independent Greek and English Lexicon of the New Testament which at once took the place of the his own translation of Wahl's Clavis. He made frequent use of his predecessors — Bruder Schleussner Wahl Bretschneider and all exegetic sources of importance; and. in the later editions particularly of the commentaries of De Wette and Meyer which he preferred on account of their great philological advantages and concise brevity without however allowing them to disturb his American orthodoxy in any important point. This extremely valuable and sterling work first appeared in 1836 and was at once welcomed as the best English lexicon of the New Test. and reprinted in three different editions in England. A new edition greatly improved and in part entirely altered appeared in 1850 and made it the first work of its kind to the present time. It is likewise an almost complete concordance and enables the student to nearly dispense with Bruder. This work is a monument of labor and industry. Its motto is 'Dies diem docet' and 'Nulla dies sine linea.'' McClintock & Strong 'Robinson was born near Southington Connecticut the-son of a Congregational minister. He was educated at Hamilton College in Clinton New York 1812-16. On a visit to Andover in 1822 Robinson fell under the spell of Moses Stuart who persuaded him to study in the seminary. In 1826 Robinson went to Europe where he studied four years primarily at Halle and Berlin. Returning to Andover he was named Professor of Biblical Literature in 1830. In 1837 Robinson was appointed to the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in New York which had been founded the year prior. William Baird History of New Testament Research II/28. A high-gloss gelatin silver photograph 222 × 296 mm laid down within a gilt border on the original cardboard mount with the photographic studio's details in gilt in the bottom margin. Also mounted there is a small gelatin silver photograph 47 × 165 mm of the signatures of the eight participants 'Government House Sydney Jan. 25 1888' is written below the original signatures. The item is in a contemporary frame wood with gilt-decorated plaster a little chipped now lacking the original glass visible image size 315 × 350 mm external dimensions 423 × 458 mm. The contemporary label of Cole's Book Arcade Melbourne is mounted on the verso. The main photograph has a couple of tiny surface chips to the top edge and a few tiny marks to the bottom right-hand corner; the mount is a little marked possibly lightly water-streaked but fortunately the photograph is untouched; these trifling blemishes have little impact on this fine portrait. This informal group portrait features the Governors of each of the Australian colonies along with the Governors of Fiji and New Zealand. It was taken on 25 January 1888 the day before the centenary of the arrival of the First Fleet at Port Jackson the main reason for their presence in Sydney. It features left to right Sir Robert George Crookshank Hamilton 1836-1895 KCB LLD Governor and Commander in Chief of Tasmania and its dependencies; Sir Anthony Musgrave 1828-1888 GCMG Governor of Queensland; Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell 1836-1899 Governor of Fiji; Henry Brougham Loch 1st Baron Loch 1827-1900 GCP GCMG PC Governor and Commander in Chief of Victoria; Charles Robert Wynn-Carrington 1st Marquess of Lincolnshire 1843-1928 KG GCMG PC JP DL Governor of New South Wales; Sir Frederick Napier Broome 1842-1896 KCMG Governor of Western Australia; Lieutenant General Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois 1821-1897 GCMG CB FRS Governor of New Zealand; and Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson 1834-1897 GCMG FRGS Governor of South Australia. Extensive research notes come with this item; they were compiled with the assistance of Dr John Fahey author of 'Australia's First Spies' Sydney 2018 and 'Traitors and Spies: Espionage and Corruption in High Places in Australia 1901-1950' Sydney 2018. Among much else the notes have identified a slightly variant photograph taken at the same time as this one held by the Blue Mountains City Library; the identity of the sitters comes from a letter and diagram sent to them from the Mitchell Library in 1929. 'From the various sources available most notably the title given by the State Library of New South Wales this photograph commemorates an unofficial side-meeting of these Governors to discuss Australia's interests in the South Pacific'. Dr Fahey puts it more succinctly when he says it likely offers 'evidence of one of our earliest "secret" off to the side policy conferences'. The notes provide a lot more background information for the purchaser. A few incidentals not mentioned there: Sir Anthony Musgrave was Governor of South Australia from 1873 to 1877 and he died on 9 October 1888; Sir William Jervois was Governor of South Australia from 1877 to 1883; Sir William Robinson was Governor of Western Australia three times between 1875 and 1895 1875-1877 1880-1883 and 1890-1895. The NP RR souvenir view book includes images of Dakota wheat fields Custer Battlefield monument Crow Indians at Yellowstone Montana cattle roundups and gold mining along the Columbia River with birds-eye views of Butte & Helena MT Spokane WA and salmon fishwheel as well as early birds-eye view of Portland OR. The text was taken from the Southern Pacific Rice Book and lists twenty-six points of advice about the rice industry and how it is a good investment. These points are listed alphabetically by letter and each entry begins with that letter. For example: "H. Harvest rice same as wheat using a rice harvester."
