A most exciting narrative in which the author discusses possible origin of the island's inhabitants, recounts evidence of cannibalism - communicated to him by a local tribesman and bartering with a tomahawk-bearing native. He further speculates on the reasons for deserted villages, and describes coconut groves, volcanic features, and a devastating eruption in 1878. A captivating report of an expedition to Papua New Guinea, the Duke of York Islands, and some of the lesser islands, accompanied by a fold-out map of the north-east portion of New Britain.
