Paulding did not have orders to do so and may well have been acting at the behest of Cornelius Vanderbilt whose interests in Nicaragua were diametrically opposite those of Walker's. President James Buchanan reprimanded Paulding and removed from his command. Senator Doolittle of Wisconsin defends Paulding's actions. Nicaraguan National Bibliography 6047.
