Abrams did not state first or later printings during this period but we presume this is a later printing as the Abrams logo on the front panel appears to be that of ca. 1970-74. A slightly shaken copy good or better with general scuffing to the edges especially the corners. Still a crisp sound copy. In a very good dust jacket showing mild edgewear and some scrapes/abrasions to the rear panel which is typical for this title. Nevertheless a fantastic copy SIGNED boldly in purple ink by Dali and dated 1976 on the blank leaf opposite the title page. 18167461Mexico City: Mariano Ontiveros 1816. First edition. 16mo 15 x 10.5 cm pp 128 179-213 11. There is a gap as noted in the pagination which is present in all copies: it is a printer's error as nothing is missing from the text. The author notes that his book is in part a translation from the Italian of Clavijero and also drawn from the work of Fr. Xavier Francisco Alegre on the Jesuits in New Spain at that time unpublished. The first part is a vigorous defense of the Jesuit order still forbidden in Mexico. Thereafter he focuses on Baja California with much on Fr. Salvatierra Ugarte Piccolo et al. as well as the customs of the native tribes of the area and a description of the region. An appendix seeks to prove that Mexico had been originally evangelized by St. Thomas the apostle and perhaps even St. Matthew! Another appendix gives a thorough account of the distribution of the 1000 copies of this book of which only a handful of copies were for sale. Often described as one of the rarest California books it seldom appears at auction and presumably is quite rare in the trade. Medina Mexico 11174; Barrett Baja 839; Howes S78; Sabin 24147 Beautiful period binding of full mottled calf with gilt incised floral patterns within borders and morocco spine label. 18635734San Salvador 1863. Very good. 4pp. on a bifolium. Folio. Portion of lower margin torn away otherwise light edge wear. A fascinating and rather lengthy anti-Barrios address by his conservative opponents and would-be deposers in El Salvador. José Gerardo Barrios Espinoza was elected president of El Salvador in 1860 following several stints as interim head of state. The present work attacks Barrios' character the "abyss of evils" that he has brought upon the country and compares him unfavorably with every other Central American leader. The final page announces that the signers are joining the invasion of the country by Guatemala and its president Rafael Carrera and defends their choice as one necessary to rid El Salvador of its liberal leader. The Guatemalan and conservative Salvadoran forces succeeded in ousting Barrios in October 1863 nine months after the printing of this document. Very scarce OCLC locates just one copy at the National Library of Chile. unknown
18335752San Salvador 1833. Good plus. Small broadside 8.5 x 6.25 inches. Disbound with small stab hole at gutter margin. Light wear and worming; two slightly larger worm holes in lower margin repaired with tape. Later bibliographical annotations in pencil. In this early Salvadoran broadside decree the government nullifies the appointment of Atanacio Urrutia to the Supreme Court and elevates Jose Felix Quiros in his stead. Printing seems to have arrived in El Salvador during the mid-1820s placing the present work within the first decade of the art there. Evidently rare -- we locate no other copies. unknown

Self-aggrandizing and partly invented the memoir is a well-written and highly entertaining addition to the Western canon.
