The ink blotting paper used by the owner is included in the back of the journal. Penciling on some interior pages. Missing bottom of one page. . A diary/common place book from New York in the 1840s. It belonged to a young woman named India Allen. Not much biographical information is known about India beyond the fact that she lived at 6 Washington Square New City. Based on her writing it is clear that she and her family comes from some means and moved within some very high social circles. The first half of this journal is mostly quotes from a variety of well-known authors such as Longfellow De Ponte Wilde and Pitt Palmer. The majority of these quote entries are dated between 1841 -1846. At the start of the New Year in 1846 India begins to record almost daily entries until June of the same year. These short entries detail her daily life what she did each day read sew who she called on and the events or dinners she went to. While they are short they are sometimes quite humorous. On January 3 she writes Went to a party enjoyed myself tolerably. In 1848 India goes into great detail about a wedding she attended in May of 1848 listing other guests and gifts that were received. Additionally around this time are some of Indias most emotional entries as she describes the death of her very close friend Fidelia Marshall 1826-1848. In two entries which she titled A Brief Sketch on the Last Hours of my Departed Friend and Obituary Written upon the Death of My Friend. These two entries in particular showcase Indias intelligent and reflective disposition. The rest of the journal is again filled with quotes from literature as well as a few recipes such as Cayenne Pepper Tea meant for sore throats. Measures 7 3/4" x 6 1/2". <br/><br/> unknown books

Vance occupied the post 1977-1980 succeeding Henry Kissinger. He accompanied President Carter on his historic visit to India in January 1978 a few months before this inscription which culminated in the Delhi Declaration in which the two nations made a strong commitment to global diplomacy and human rights. The visit was crucial in restoring good relations with India following Nixon's tilt toward Pakistan in 1971. Kamath was Washington correspondent for the Times of India from 1969 to 1978. Sheet maps 22" x 29.5".<br/><br/> This interesting 1934 pocket map depicts the plan of the Gulbarga Fort and vicinity located in the northern part of the state of Karnataka at the time Hyderabad State in southern India. Beautifully detailed the map notes the fort important roads lakes wells vegetation and a host of other topographic elements.<br><br>Originally built by Raja Gulchand a feudatory of the Warangal Kakatiyas it was further fortified and enlarged in 1327 by Sultan Al-ud-din Bahmani of Bahmani Sultanate in 1327 and Adil Shah. Various monuments such as mosques palaces tombs and other structures were also built. Most notable of these is the Jami Masjid built on the lines of the Great Mosque of Cordoba in Spain is one of the first mosques in southern India. The fort remained the capital of the Bahmani Kingdom until 1424. Later the fort would be razed by the Vijaynagar Emperor and subsequently rebuilt by Yusuf Adil Shah the founder of the Bujapur Sultanate.<br><br>This map was published under the authority of Brigadier H. J. Couchman Surveyor General of India. It is in good condition with minor wear along the original folds and some offsetting. The map is lined with silk.<br/><br/> Survey of India unknown books

In addition to 7 Typed Letters Signed by Chelmsford's assistants requesting and thanking donors for their contributions to the endowment there is an Autograph Letter Signed by Lady Chelmsford in 1920 to the royal family: "I wish to thank your Highness most warmly for your splendid contribution towards the endowment fund. Your Highness is always so generous to movements which have to their object the amelioration of the conditions of women and children." Rowland Burr reported: “My dear Father This is the first letter I have wrote thee; From the Isle of France no opportunity presented that we thought would be before us. On our arrival here we found Several American by which I intended to rite but was fortunately or unfortunately taken ill of a Bilious Fever just before their departure which lasted ne upwards of thirty days since which I have done no business except write a few letter of business just as the Brig caravan departed. Thee was thought of but before I got through it exhausted me so much that I felt the effects of it for several. To the point we hoped to perform your voyage in Twelve months. Six rich Portuguese arrived with us & the market rose entirely out of our reach - we are waiting have heard of your expected Embargo four of those ships are done and the market is coming down. We have a very excellent prospect of getting our goods cheap after holidays which will end about the latter x 26 August. Part of this month we expect to leave here by the first to the middle of December. My prospects this voyage are justly flattering. Should goods command a high price at home it ill place me once more completely on my legs as it would enable me to payoff the half of our deficiency. My proportion; which I would most willingly do if commerce is open if I can work: In this way for a few years it would answer my desires which shall be limited to a competency. Octor. 12 1812. They worship but one God the supreme ruler of the universe who they say is everywhere & at all times of him they have no Image no man having seen him; the gods they use are representations of inferior divinities which are destroyed after the celebration is over - with the exception of such as are found in their principal Temples made of Bronze marble &c. the principals of their religion appear pretty much lost few of their priests understands much of what they pretend to teach. - I have not found to who the same a' c - & you can get little more from them than "so man say God do" - - - - 23rd Octor. Fine – a careful and tidy collection of photographs all neatly tipped-on labeled and dated by hand. <br/><br/>Images of Agra the Taj Mahal shrines palaces schools streets tombs Sikri Delhi Tughlagabad Lahore camel caravans Peshawar bazaars Khyber Pass Kashmir – to list everything in this far-reaching journey would be a disservice to the reader. Comprised mostly of landscapes and images of the Indian people some elements of the personal do crop up here and there: Our author is featured in only one photograph – he sits on horseback with traveling companions also on horseback and this 2” x 3” image is labeled “Self / Lottery Henry / Tommy Alice / The Wallaby” ostensibly identifying his friends and their horses; Henry will appear again tiny against a landscape labeled “The End Pavillion Chasma Shahi Henry looking for bear.” Where it is light on the candid it remains a diligent record – every image is identified and all are crisp and clear studiously photographed.
