Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Bound with a primitive hand-stitched thick paper. Demy 8vo. (22 x 12,5 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 34, [2] p. Some notes and marking in pencil, foxing and fading on somewhat stained paper, slight chipping on extremities and made a cover inside by an original period diploma. Overall a fair/good copy. Scarce first Turkish edition of this first hand travel account of Mumbai, by a French journalist Edmond Cotteau during his travel to India in 1878-1879 describing the city, its inhabitants, flora and fauna, and architectural buildings. "Küçük Seyahâtler" [i.e. Small Travels] is a book series including travel accounts at the beginning of the 20th century in the Ottoman/Turkish literature, which consisted of four separately published titles: China, Afghanistan, Chicago and Mumbai. Cotteau was a French journalist and photographer. He became a collaborator for "Le Temps" and "Le Tour du monde" taking photographs of a rare quality for his time. He traveled to the Americas in 1876-1877, India in 1878-1879, Central Europe, Japan and returned to China and Indochina in 1881-1882. He sailed around the world in 1883-1884, in 364 days, widely covered by the French press. Özege 2513.; TBTK 6678.; OCLC 223157027, 1122689017.

Fine Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph document stamped by Ottoman accounting manager 'Ahmed Vefik' related to sunken Tokat [Tokad] torpedo boat during Balkan Wars, (1912-1913). Folio. (34x 21 cm). In Ottoman script. 3 p. [MANUSCRIPT] Autograph document stamped by Ottoman accounting manager 'Ahmed Vefik' related to sunken Tokat [Tokad] torpedo boat during in the Battle of Preveza. The Battle of Preveza, in September 1911, was the first naval engagement fought during the Italo-Turkish War. Five Italian Soldato-class destroyers encountered five Ottoman ships off the Greek port of Preveza. Over the course of two days, four of the Turkish vessels present were sunk or captured and the city was bombarded. On September 29, just after the beginning of the war, the Italian fleet in the Ionian Sea began searching for Ottoman warships. At about 4:00 pm, an hour or so after war was declared, five Italian destroyers under Prince Luigi Amedeo, sighted two enemy torpedo boats at sea in between Corfu and Preveza. Outnumbered, the Ottomans opened fire but soon after chose to flee without making any hits. The torpedo boat Tokat steered north chased by three destroyers while Anatolia headed south followed by the remaining two Italian ships. After several moments of firing Tokat ran aground near Nicopolis. She had been hit fifteen times, caught on fire, and was completely destroyed by additional Italian rounds. Nine men were killed, including the ship's captain.
Solvyns pinx, Calcutta". Tutte sono numerate. I fogli misurano 332x252 circa e sono tutti inseriti in passe-partout. Provenienti dall'opera "The costume of Indostan" edita la prima volta a Londra nel 1804-1805 da Edward Orme, e che rielaborava le acqueforti di Frans Balthasar Solvyns (1760-1824) realizzate per l'opera "A collections of two hundred and fifty colored etchings: descriptive of the manner, customs and dresses of the Hindoos" (Calcutta 1799). Gli strumenti raffigurati sono: D'Hauk, Jutrung, A D'Holuc, A Tubla, Saringee, Kaura, Nagra, Surmungla, Jugo Jhumpo, Pukwauz, A Sunk or Chank, A Tumboora, A Sittara or Guitar, A Sarinda or Violin, Pennauck or Been. Ottime condizioni.
