La première édition de Futehally, la note d'introduction cite également, K.P.S. Menon, ministre indien des Affaires étrangères louant le roman comme une histoire « émouvante » d'une jeune fille « Errant entre deux mondes/L'un mort, l'autre pas encore né », où le monde mourant de «dignité et décorum, parfums et sorbets, Nawabs et nautch girls» est défié par modernes « différentes valeurs, vitales, iconoclastes, antinomiques ». Bien que Futehally ait publié en 1951, elle avait écrit principalement pendant la phase finale du mouvement nationaliste axé sur la lutte pour la liberté qui forme une toile de fond à ce conte avec la mention de Gandhi inspirant tout le monde pendant cette période. Allevata secondo la rigida usanza dello Zanana, ne accettò le leggi senza ribellarsi. Dopo il suo matrimonio, avvenuto all'età di 18 anni, si stabilì in Giappone dove il marito aveva un'impresa e nella sua nuova patria cercò, con altri indiani colà residenti, di fare propaganda per la libertà dell'India. Intraprese numerosi viaggi in Oriente ed in Occidente, e furono questi viaggi a liberare il suo spirito da ogni convenzionale tradizionalismo ed a darle il coraggio di scrivere un romanzo sulla vita intima della donna musulmana in India.
