One is on the city of Calcutta, the other on art and art history, with special reference to Calcutta in the persuasion of the theme. The other is a gallery of about 80 contemporary artists from the region with a color plate for each, often with an inset of the artist's depiction of themself, in full color. Book shows no wear of any kind, back cover may have light staining to rustic cloth boards -- hard to tell if it's orginal or not. Dust jacket worn at top of spine with general scuffing, tiny edge tears. 8 5/8" x 11 1/4". Many color prints.

Segnatura: []2 a8 b6 A-K8 L4, []6 A-K8 L5. William Bolts, commerciante e avventuriero olandese, fu al servizio della East India Company in Bengala fra il 1759 e il 1768, anno in cui giunse alla rottura con la Compagnia, che gli valse la deportazione e la perdita della fortuna accumulata. Quale testimone (e attore) della rapace colonizzazione inglese in Bengala pubblicò anonimamente, nel 1772, queste “Considerations on Indian Affairs” che conobbero grande fortuna internazionale (traduzioni in Francese, Tedesco, Italiano) e servirono a rafforzare le tesi critiche verso Compagnia delle Indie Orientali di Adam Smith e altri economisti e intellettuali europei. Prezioso e importante documento sul dominio inglese e sullo stato del subcontinente indiano alla fine del XVIII secolo, quest'opera mostra chiaramente l'intento critico già dalle antiporte, raffiguranti una l'autore allo scrittoio che osserva le truppe inglesi, l'altra alcuni locali ridotti in schiavitù dagli europei, sullo sfondo di un villaggio in fiamme. Seconda edizione francese, tradotta dal politico e storico Jean-Nicolas Démeunier, deputato negli Stati Generali del 1789 e Presidente della Costituente, poi funzionario durante il Direttorio e il Primo Impero; fuggito negli Stati Uniti durante il Terrore, con la consulenza di Thomas Jefferson scrisse numerosi articoli sull'America nell'Encyclopedie Panckoucke, portando avanti l'istanza antibritannica che anima anche quest'opera.
