Kashmir Crisis: Unholy Anglo-Pak Nexus, painstakingly researched and documented, provides an exhaustive study of the history of the crisis from 1947 to 1971. The initial Chapters speak of the splendour of Hindu Kashmir, its brilliant contribution to the cultural integration of India since time immemorial; and the forcible conversion of the Hindu population to Islam starting from the beginning of the fourteenth to the mid-nineteenth century by which time nine-tenths of the Hindus had become Muslims making Kashmir a Muslim majority State. The book then proceeds to present a connected and cogent account of the ghastly events that rocked Kashmir for about a quarter of a century following her accession to India in October 1947. Britain throughout played a partisan role not only when India took the matter to the UN but also in the wars of 1947 and 1965. With conviction and clarity, the author traces the role of Britain in the Indo-Pakistan dispute on Kashmir, which was neither fair, nor honest, nor ethical. In all her acts of aggression including the unprovoked wars against India to undo the accession of Kashmir to her, Pakistan had the full cooperation and the support of Britain both openly and clandestinely. To add insult to injury, Britain chose to maintain an ominous silence over Pakistan's illegal annexations of Indian territories in Kashmir, which were named 'Azad Kashmir' and which became a hotbed of intrigue and treachery. Until the late 1960s, Britain's policy on the Kashmir crisis was to make Pakistan, the aggressor, a beneficiary at the expense of India. In spite of the huge mountain ranges, Ladakh had developed into an active and important religious, cultural and commercial relation with many areas including Buddhist Tibet. Ladakh along with Sikkhim, Bhutan and Mustang in the Himalaya continuous to be practiced Tibetan Buddhism as a living religion, as it has been for thousands years. I would like to express my gratitude for the assistance I have received from various people and institutions researching and writing this book. This book have mainly grown out of a dissertation that I wrote at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. Few articles that I have already published are also included in the book. The demand of State autonomy has remained a highly contentious issue in Indian Politics right since the time when accession of Kashmir to the Indian federalism took place. This is a demand that often generate tension between Center and the State. It is felt that the autonomy for the State may actually come to mean autonomy for Kashmir region only. It may not flow to the regional and sub-regional levels. The autonomy that extends beyond the State needs a multi-layered package of autonomy that extends beyond the State to the regional or sub-regional levels. Autonomy is needed to inspire confidence to the people, to make the system more democratic, to ensure speedier and balanced development and to make the administration accountable to the people and thus more efficient and above all, to evolve a composite and harmonious personality of the State. None of these can be achiever in the present unitary system of the state and by centralization of power and administration. A more federalized and bottom-up approach is needed to solve the problem of the State. This book is an attempt to examine the relationship of Kashmir identity with the Indian Union, the regional identity of Jammu and Ladakh with the State. This book on the one hand is the description of the relationship between the Centre and the State and on the other hand is the description of relationship between the three regions, namely Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. My prescription is deeply federal and decentralizing in nature. About The Author:- Sunita, is a Lecturer in Kalindi College, University of Delhi. The present study offers an assessment of security concerns in Central Asia after the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991. It deals with the transition period for the five Central Asian States from the communist system to a democratic and pluralistic one. Essentially, the focus of the writer is on bilateral, multilateral and international commitments of these States to ensure peace and security in the region. The withdrawal of nuclear warheads from Kazakhstan, collective security formula, bilateral agreements and the role of the big powers— all make an interesting study. The author has discussed these concerns in the context of the stance of neighbouring States vis-a-vis Central Asia. Economic interests also figure wherever necessary. This work is highly useful to those who would like to concentrate on any aspect of history in Central Asia and adjoining regions in the post-Soviet period.
