Il 12 gennaio 2010 la sua capitale è stata distrutta da un terremoto: una frattura insanabile nella storia dello Stato caraibico. Per poche settimane i riflettori del mondo si sono accesi su quella terra, e molti vip hanno promosso in prima persona l'idea del build back better, 'ricostruire meglio'. Ma cos'è successo in questi dieci anni? Nel libro si racconta di come i Caschi blu dell'Onu abbiano lavorato sull'isola, ma anche di come abbiano portato il colera e siano stati coinvolti in diversi scandali sessuali; di come l'Italia abbia inviato una costosissima portaerei e di come si siano persi due milioni di euro raccolti tramite una campagna sms. Ci volgeremo poi alla vicina Repubblica Dominicana, dove si trovano 200mila apolidi a causa della diaspora. Haiti è ancora in difficoltà, anche a causa di una comunità internazionale più interessata a perseguire i propri obiettivi strategici che a lottare contro la povertà.
