The United States assumed custodial power over Cuba under the treaty ending the Spanish-American War. Cuba gained formal independence in 1902 as the Republic of Cuba but the U.S. continued to keep troops in Cuba and retained the right to intervene in its internal and foreign affairs. During this period which lasted to 1908 with later incursions the U.S. military supervised the development of the local military and implemented several public-works projects such as a modern railroad system.
