Presumably a history of the Dakota War of 1862 in which Native American Sioux twice attacked the settlement of New Ulm in Minnesota. Native Americans had been repeatedly cheated by the local and US governments out of land and supplies prior to the war with these attacks and others the result. GOOD condition. Uneven toning minor spotting and staining to the rear cover. Minor soiling. Some scuffing and bumping along the extremities. Heavy browning to the text block. Store stamp on the first endpaper. A detailed history of West Point to its vital use as a fort on the Hudson during the American Revolution to its eventual transformation into a military academy. This includes discussion of the chain across the Hudson to obstruct passage during the war and Benedict Arnold and his secret correspondences and plot. FAIR condition lacking the abovementioned pages. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the covers heaviest along the hinges. General fading. Minor soiling with a few faint stains to the rear cover. 1869020389Washington: Government Printing Office 1869. Disbound. Good. Disbound government document lacking any wrappers or spine holding it together. 239 pp. all loose but complete. It appears all pages were slightly cropped along the left edge and perhaps the other edges as well. A US government document providing lengthy testimony on the voter suppression disenfranchisement and violence encountered by African Americans in the state of Georgia when trying to vote or serve in office. Governor Rufus Bullock opens the testimony recalling several incidents of violence and intimidation and discusses the expulsion from state congress of 29 African Americans elected to office. Following his testimony Henry McNeal Turner testifies as to his experiences as a leader in the African Methodist Episcopal Church working in Georgia. Bullock worked to establish equal rights for African Americans in Georgia becoming the "most hated man in the state." He left Georgia in 1871 due to threats made by the Ku Klux Klan. GOOD condition. He eventually became professor of typography at the University of Oregon. A vital and vigorous personality in American printing he made beautiful books in California under patronage which has permitted him to work without too much consideration for limits of time materials and expense. All of Nash's books are <br />collectors items and are highlighted in a 1932 edition by Lakeside Press ranking Nash's books amongst the best printers and binders since William Morris.California History A book printed by John Henry Nash of San Francisco titled 'Exposition Addressed to the Chamber of Deputies of the Congress of the Union by Senor Don Carlos Antonio Carrillo Deputy for Alta California Concerning the Regulation and Administration of the Pious Fund. San Francisco Printed by John Henry Nash. 1938.</p><p>Only 650 Copies were printed and bound. 35 pages including introduction and actual speech. Some cover wear and jacket tear but otherwise this is a book in exceptional condition. The California Pious Fund started in the late 1600's and was used by the Jesuits Dominicans and Franciscans to set up and run the California missions up and down the coast of California. Potential invasions from Russia French and Americans in the 1830's and some earlier instances the fund was used to support the military defense of California. When Santa Ana confiscated the fund and demanded that all the missions and mission properties be sold in the 1840's the fund nearly collapsed however a rejuvenation of legal action against the government of Mexico to recover the proceeds of the fund to help support the missions which were still operating but not as a military defense system in the 1860's. An important piece of California history a very nice and somewhat rare book.</p> Nash, John hardcover

An excellent copy binding tight and unmarred moderate foxing mostly marginal to about half of text leaves but plates completely clean and richly colored. Continental editions of Catlin are quite scarce and this offers reduced-scale versions of the plates in the North American Indian Portfolio at a fraction of the cost. Howes C 243b. Sabin 11539. Bound volume of the Dover New Hampshire newspaper the Dover Gazette and Strafford Advertiser comprising of every weekly issue spanning from December 4 1832 to November 28 1833. Of particular note is a printing of Andrew Jackson's proclamation on Nullification asserting that states could not override or disregard federal law. This was issued in response to South Carolina's refusal to enforce tariffs. Also present is an article written by George Catlin on the Mandan tribe recalling customs ceremonies and dress among other subjects. The tribe had been decimated by small pox with an estimated 125 remaining by 1838. Also present is an article on the Native American leader Black Hawk written a little after his capture. A small paragraph describes a former Mormon displeasure with the faith. GOOD condition. Ex-library with exterior spine labels interior pastedowns and minor markings. First leaf DETACHED. With several passages of historical detail on the American Revolution including brief mention of Yorktown and Valley Forge. A footnote also contains a short genealogy of the Washington family. This speech was given to the freemason members of the Mount-Vernon Lodge as well as to St. John's Church in Providence Rhode Island on February 22nd 1800 5800. GOOD condition.
