Also included is a look at the progress of the abolitionists and the efforts by the government to 'nationalize' the institution of slavery. Published and edited by Gamaliel Bailey a journalist publisher and ardent abolitionist. GOOD condition. Minor toning and very light soiling to the piece. Number 16 in pencil twice to the front page. A program of events for a convention held by the Fashion League of America listing the board of directors members of various committees etc. as well as a list of talks and fashion shows to be held. This includes an opening fashion show and one displaying French fashions. Talks look at the business side of dressmaking and fashion. The Fashion Art League of America was founded by Alla Ripley Bannister in 1913 after she became president of the Chicago Dressmakers Club and reorganized it. Going by her professional name Madame Ripley she was influential in promoting fashion as an art and establishing it as a business for women at a time when women were expected to give up work once married. She took part in a 1913 fashion show in Chicago that featured dresses and clothing inspired by European Cubism and worked throughout her career to promote American fashion as equal or superior to French fashions see The Beverly Review Sept. 17 2019 article for previous information. Harold Stassen ran many times as a Republican candidate never receiving his party's nomination; Walter Mondale served as Vice-President from 1977-81 and ran against Ronald Reagan in 1984; Hubert Humphrey served as Vice-President from 1965-69 and ran against Richard Nixon in 1968; Eugene McCarthy is perhaps best known for his 1968 presidential run where he gained some success running as an anti-war candidate opposed to Johnson's handling of the Vietnam War.
