br. Narratore, critico letterario, pensatore, Maurice Blanchot è ormai riconosciuto come un esponente di primo piano della cultura novecentesca. In Italia, tuttavia, i suoi libri (specie i romanzi e racconti) sono ancora poco tradotti e studiati. Il presente volume si propone di ovviare, anche se solo in parte, a tale lacuna, prendendo in esame, nelle due sezioni in cui è suddiviso, prima alcuni testi narrativi dell'autore, poi alcuni temi fra quelli da lui trattati negli scritti saggistici. Un dato che emerge subito è proprio il fitto intreccio di richiami e analogie che uniscono fra loro i due versanti dell'opera. Nutrito da una vasta e profonda cultura letteraria e filosofica, nonché dai rapporti d'amicizia con intellettuali come Levinas, Bataille o Derrida, Blanchot ha saputo usare tutti questi stimoli come punti di partenza per un'elaborazione fortemente personale. Essa ha dato luogo sia a romanzi e racconti che appaiono ancor oggi strani e spiazzanti, sia a riflessioni che hanno restituito al fatto di scrivere tutta la serietà e la rischiosità di un impegno totale, che concerne direttamente la vita e la morte, l'una e l'altra inafferrabili. Gaston Bachelard si è chiesto una volta: «È mai stato possibile fare della poesia con del pensiero?». La lettura dei libri blanchotiani, nei quali si assiste a un vero e proprio pensare per immagini, costituisce un'esemplare risposta positiva a tale quesito.

Die Einbettung der Vernunft in die Lebenswelt hat den Charakter der Vernunft stärker verändert, als Husserl und seine Gefolgsleute es wahrhaben wollten. Die Krise der abendländischen Vernunft brachte es mit sich, daß das alte Wort >Leben< einen ganzen Fächer von Bedeutungen entfaltete und sich mit einem Sinn auflud, der zwischen Erneuerung und Subversion der Vernunft bedrohlich schwankt. -- In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit Husserl und Merleau-Ponty, denen die ersten drei Aufsätze dieses Bandes gelten, geht es Waldenfels darum, die Konzeption der Lebenswelt gegen ihre Wirkungsgeschichte, ja sogar gegen ihre Herkunftsgeschichte zu verteidigen. Er zeigt, daß in einer radikalisierten Phänomenologie - nicht anders als bei Foucault oder Derrida - "das Ursprüngliche zersplittert". Die große Vernunft der alten Kosmologien und Geschichtsteleologien wäre klein zu schreiben; die Ratio zerfällt in eine Vielzahl von Rationalitäten und Irrationalitäten. Mit dem Eindringen von Kontingenz und Konflikt in die Kernzone der Vernunft entstehen Fragen, die Waldenfels in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Regelkonzeption Wittgensteins und Winchs, mit der Rationalisierungsthese von Habermas und der Diskursanalyse Foucaults vorantreibt. -- Mit dem Problem einer Genealogie praktischer Normen aus der Lebenswelt berührt Waldenfels einen sensiblen Punkt. Er gibt zu bedenken, ob man dem drohenden Relativismus nicht auf andere Weise entgehen kann als durch eine Totalisierung des Lebens oder eine Universalisierung von Normen, und verweist für eine nicht-metaphysisch begründete Ethik auf einen Denker wie Levinas. -- Eine weitere Gruppe von Aufsätzen beschäftigt sich mit einzelnen "Regionen der Lebenswelt<. Anhand von Problemtiteln wie Alltag, Landschaft, Heimat geht es Waldenfels um eine Phänomenologie der gelebten Räumlichkeit.
