The first English translation of this work first published in French as 'Les Vrais Mysteres de Paris' in 1844.'Life in Paris' is a historical romance thriller set in the heart of the city following the intertwined fates of a host of characters in the early decades of the nineteenth century. Illustrated with a frontispiece and three plates.Though Vidocq is claimed as the author to the title page his name was borrowed by the true authors Horace Raisson and Maurice Alhoy.Eugene Francois Vidocq was a French criminal turned criminalist. In his early life he worked as a thief then after spending time in prison turned his life around eventually becoming the founder and first director of France's first criminal investigative agency and the head of the first known private detective agency. His fascinating life provided inspiration for many authors including Victor Hugo in his creation of Jean Valjean and Javert.Collated bound without three plates. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally smart with light marks to the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. The floral designs include ornamental friezes carpets among other creative designs. The dossier is attributed to Verneuil in pencil but no date or name printed on the folio. Maurice Pillard Verneuil 1869-1942 was a designer who is known for his influential textile book on the subject of Art Deco design; 'Etoffes et Tapis Etrangers' which was produced for the Paris Art Deco exhibition in 1925.
