"Murderer,drug-pedlar,white slaver - in twenty years,in many countries Dimitrios Makropoulos had been them all. He died as he had lived - violently" A chance encounter with a Turkish colonel with a penchant for British crime novels leads mystery writer Charles Latimer into a world of sinister political and criminal maneuvers throughout the Balkans in the years between the world wars. Hoping that the career of the notorious Dimitrios, whose body has been identified in an Istanbul morgue, will inspire a plot for his next novel, Latimer soon finds himself caught up in a shadowy web of assassination, espionage, drugs, and treachery.A classic by a master story teller. Monumental, profusely illustrated work on the Sarakatsani, a formerly transhumant ethnic Greek shepherd population. – Contents, Illustration: Rare, comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated study by Greek historian and ethnographer Angheliki Hadjimichali (or Angelikis Chatzimichali, 1895-1965) on the history and present of the Sarakatsani, an ethnic Greek population of shepherds then still not settled but transhumant. Envisaged to appear in 3 volumes, only 2 were finally published. Besides a comprehensive account on all aspects of Sarakatsani culture and living circumstances as well as a substantial chapter with statistics, present publication puts a strong focus on illustrations, e.g. by including numerous private photographies taken or sketches drawn by the researcher depicting community members and groups, housing, household goods, tools and art objects. The colour plate shows embroideries applied to folk costumes. 2 folded maps at the end of vol. 1 give a deeper insight into seasonal migration movements of the Sarakatsani across the Southern balkans. – Condition: Wrappers at margins occasionally slightly torn, edges minimally dusty, otherwise very well preserved, mainly uncut set of this publication with a stated print run of 1000 copies, hard to find in trade however.

This offprint from the Greek journal published in a long run from 1928 to 1961 in 24 volumes, examines the 14th-century coastline of the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond with toponyms and topography on two portolan maps of the period. "Bryer was a British historian of the Byzantine Empire and founder of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham. Part of his childhood was spent in Jerusalem and he was acquainted with Sir Steven Runciman, historian, and Byzantine Scholar. He initially remained at Balliol for his doctorate on the Empire of Trebizond, which he completed in 1967, but in 1964 he moved to the University of Birmingham where he created a program in Byzantine studies. In 1975 he founded the journal Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. From 1976, he was the founding Director of the Centre for Byzantine Studies, and in 1980 he was appointed Professor of Byzantine Studies, a post which he held until 1999." (Wikipedia). Not in OCLC.

New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 78 p. The presence of Kosovar Turks: A relation of identity and education. After the collapse of the communist system in Yugoslavia the nationalistic aspirations of Serbs and Albanians were apparently strengthened. In line with this their embracing of a distinct ethnic also increased. Consequently, it is worth considering whether Kosovar Turks' appeals to identity appeals have changed or not? Kosovar Turks were also exposed to pressures during the 1990s and this could have affected their nationalistic appeals. Thus, Turkish identity aspirations might have strengthened between 1992 and 2010. In order to test it, I will analyse the number of the students who participated in Turkish language education in Kosovo throughout the period mentioned above. One assumption here is that the number of the students who follow Turkish language education in schools is proof of a commitment to Turkish identity but I see no strong reason to doubt this assumption. Changes in the number of the students then should reflect the level of commitment to Turkish identity.

The Double Headed Eagle, the symbol of the Late Byzantine Empire, speaks eloquently to the worldview of the Byzantines, whose Empire looked both to the East and to the West, but never was-or is-really part of either. At its apogee, the Byzantine Empire was the highest civilization in Europe-the Center. This Double Headed Eagle is cherished by the Balkan Orthodox successors to Byzantium, and versions of it grace the national flags of Serbia, Montenegro, and even Albania. Encroached upon by both the Muslim East and the Catholic West, the Byzantine Eagle succumbed, only to emerge, in a state of arrested development, after several hundred years of Turkish or Western Catholic rule. This stunted progression emerges time and again in the civic culture, architecture, economics, and politics of the region, and has direct relevance on political and economic issues today, including Greece's present financial malaise, and the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Traveling through this Ex-Byzantine zone, Billinis offers history, architecture, personal experiences, and numerous anecdotes to expound on key central themes. First, that the Balkan Orthodox nations form a common culture and virtual commonwealth, while still maintaining ethnic, geographical, and linguistic diversity. Without understanding this common Byzantine base, it is impossible to appreciate and to understand the region. Second, the common experience of Turkish rule, while preserving Byzantine culture and insulating the Orthodox religion from Catholic encroachment, did so by cutting off Byzantine Europe from economic, political, cultural, and civic development in progress in Western Europe. The states that emerged from this condition were-and are-ill prepared to contribute and to compete in modern Europe, and in a globalized world Print on Demand
