Istanbul holds a leading place among research areas of contemporary sociology and urban design. In the wide spectrum of research fields, ranging from archaeology to history, from art to literature, and from religious culture to daily life, the city provides answers to humanity's fundamental queries. Is this merely a coincidence or a mesh of problems in dire need of a resolution, stratified throughout history from the past to present? If our answer entails resolving this mesh of problems on the scale of Istanbul, then we can certainly call for a common denominator through which diverse opinions and approaches can counter with one another. The Annual of Istanbul Studies thus begins its publishing life to compensate for this need in terms of modern scientific thought.

New English Original leather bdg. HC. In special box. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 240 p. A Bosporus adventure. A Bosporus Adventure is a history of the Woman's College at Constantinople by a former president. Mary Mills Patrick was born 10 March 1850 in Canterbury, New Hampshire to John & Harriet (White) Patrick. She graduated from the Lyons Collegiate Institute in Lyons, Iowa, in 1869. In 1871, by appointment of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, she became a teacher in a mission school in Erzurum. In her four years there Patrick learned ancient and modern Armenian. In 1875 she was transferred to the American High School for Girls in Üsküdar, and she became principal of the school in 1889. During her summers she lived in Greek villages. She thus was able to add Greek and Turkish to her repertoire of languages. After a study furlough in the United States she received a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1890. In that year, after much planning and the securing of a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the American High School became the American College for Girls at Constantinople, later known as Constantinople Woman's College. Patrick served as president of the college from its opening. Her summer studies at the Universities of Heidelberg, Zürich, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, and Oxford resulted in a Ph.D. from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1897. Her dissertation was published in 1899 as Sextus Empiricus and Greek Scepticism. When the college was destroyed by fire in 1905, a new site was acquired in Arnavutköyü on the European side of the Bosporus. A new charter in 1908 ended the college's ties to the mission board, and in 1914 the new campus was occupied. Patrick kept the school open through the Balkan Wars, the Turkish revolution, and World War I, and through those changes it evolved from a school primarily for minority Greek, Armenian, and Bulgarian Christian women into a leading centre of higher education for Turkish women. She remained president until her retirement in 1924, after which she moved back to the United States. The American College for Girls later affiliated with nearby Robert College for men. Patrick's books include Sappho and the Island of Lesbos (1912); The Greek Skeptics (1929); Under Five Sultans (1929), an autobiography; and A Bosporus Adventure (1934), a history of the college.

Istanbul Research Institute presents a collection of papers in its new book. Although it does not discuss each siege that the city has encountered throughout its history of nearly two millennia, Byzantion'dan Constantinopolis'e Istanbul Kusatmalari presents a full view -panopticon- of the ones that sources bring to the forefront. It is a collection of works selected from current literature that takes into consideration the diversity of ancient sources, epigraphical documents, and numismatic finds which have gained more prominence in Ancient and Medieval studies. The book contains research essays written in Turkish and English which not only focus on the forces that have besieged Istanbul (ever since its foundation, the city has been sieged first by its closest neighbors, the Thracians, and later the Hellenes, the Macedonians, Hellenistic kingdoms, the Romans, the Avars, the Sassanids, the Arabs, the Bulgars, the Rus, the Crusaders, and the Ottomans), but also draw attention to political rivalries, sieges triggered by conflicts that resulted in civil wars, and the capital's defense elements.

For the artist, there is a particularly productive relationship between the hand and the object. The hand must wield the brush masterfully; its skill must predominate when shaping the mass of clay. The fingers must find the way to elicit the finest sound from the strings of the violin, the keys of the piano. Here the hand searches for thought and feeling; the instant it finds what it has sought - in spite of its appetite - it must rise from the banquet table of sound or colour or form, otherwise, like every other thing that loses its equilibrium, it becomes subject to damage. The hand of the designer takes heed of the relationship between hand and object. Perhaps his relationship with the object develops as it passes through the filter of his relationship with the hand, because in the person-object relationship, holding and using are significantly predominant. But whether we are discussing art or design, if there is no relationship with creative potential in the relationship between matter and product, the hand is nothing more than a useful tool. From this aspect, the hand is the confessor of the heart, the brain and the aggregation that anticipates the creative potential... The collaboration between the Fine Arts Faculty of Marmara University and the Pera Museum was based upon the condition that the ten divisions of this Faculty would be included in the exhibition and that it would be comprised from the works of the graduating class. It was certain that this interdisciplinary exhibition would display an energetic and extremely colourful totality. It was important to present the exhibition within the framework of a shared theme that would unify these varying techniques and disciplines. Ultimately the discussions on this subject led to the choice of the title "el/le", because of the breadth of its meaning. In the "EL/LE" exhibition, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, ceramics, industrial products, interior design, textiles, photography and cinema come together in the opulence generated by the traditional arts of the hand. The "hand" is interpreted by the hands of artists and designers. What aspects of the hand will be beautified through the abundant energy of these creators? This exhibition provided the conclusive answer to that question.
