The volume covers the period from the arrival of the Slavs and proto-Bulgars in the Balkan penisula, leading to the formation of the Slav-Bulgarian state in 681, and of the Bulgarian nationality (Slav in essence and Bulgarian in name) towards the end of the 9th century, up to 1940 ie. Until the beginning of the Second World War in the Balkans.
Iosif Constantin Dragan .. was a Romanian and Italian businessman, writer, historian and [billionaire] also a publisher."According to historian Lucian Boia, Dragan promoted an extreme version of protochronism, which claimed that the Romania was the cradle of civilization, and the Romanian people the oldest in Europe: As the author of We, the Thracians (1976) and editor of the periodical of the same title (Noi, tracii) that was launched in 1974, he was the leading figure of an entire movement aimed at amplifying the role of the Thracians in European history, a movement supported by all sorts of amateurs (even a lawyers' group!) but also by some less than scrupulous professionals (among them the archaeologists Dumitru Berciu and Ion Horatiu Crisan)... to claim that the ancestors of the Romanians lived 100,000 years ago, eloquent proof that the Romanian people is the oldest in the continent, if not in the world. As for the extent of the Thracians' territory, Dragan generously allows them almost half of Europe, centered, evidently, on the present-day space of Romania" Note : Volume I ONLY.274p. plates maps. Very Good Bulgarian Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In Bulgarian. 56 p., ills. Uncut and untrimmed pages. Ilarion Makariopolski: Metropolitan of Turnovo on the occasion of 50 years since his death. Six copies in WorldCat; OCLC: 222059532 / 34375853. Hilarion of Makariopolis (born Stoyan Stoyanov Mihaylovski), (1812-1875) was a 19th-century Bulgarian cleric and one of the leaders of the struggle for an autonomous Bulgarian church. Born in Elena in 1812 in a prominent Bulgarian family, Mihaylovski received substantial schooling for the period, initially in his native town and later at the Greek school in Arbanasi. He became a monk in the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos in 1832 and continued his education at the school of noted Greek enlightener Theophilos Kairis on the island of Andros, later studying for two years at a famous high school in Athens. A close friend of Georgi Rakovski, Ilarion Makariopolski took an active part in the Macedonian revolutionary society. Since 1844 he guided the Bulgarian church struggle from Constantinople together with Neofit Bozveli, and was exiled to Mount Athos between 1845 and 1850. On 3 April 1860, during Easter service in Constantinople, Ilarion intentionally did not mention the name of the Patriarch of Constantinople, which, according to the canon law, is an act of throwing off his authority. A decision of the Patriarchate sent Makariopolski back to Mount Athos into exile in 1861-1864 together with the bishops that supported him, Auxentius of Veles and Paisius of Plovdiv. After the Ottoman government of Abdülaziz granted the right to establish an autonomous Bulgarian Exarchate for the Bulgarian dioceses under the Sultan's firman promulgated on February 28 (the Julian calendar), 1870, Ilarion was a member of the Provisional Mixed Exarchic Council and of the first Synod. Upon the unilateral declaration by Antim I of an independent national church of the Bulgarians in May 1872, Ilarion was anathematized by the Patriarchal Synod. The condemnation was later affirmed at the Council in Constantinople in September the same year. Since 1872 he was Metropolitan of Tarnovo and died in Constantinople on 4 June 1875. He was buried in the yard of the Bulgarian St Stephen Church in the city. Ilarion Ridge in Breznik Heights on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named for Ilarion Makariopolski. (Source: Wikipedia).

This illustrated, revisionary account of the long reign of the Byzantine emperor Basil II (976-1025) establishes that the 'Bulgar-slayer' legend was in fact created long after Basil's death, and shows how the emperor's supposedly fearsome reputation was seized upon by scholars and politicians in the modern period. ; 182 pages
