8vo, ril. ed. sovracop. pp443. «Nella città di Antiochia c'era una volta un re di nome Antioco, da cui la città stessa ebbe nome Antiochia.» Così si apre la Storia di Apollonio re di Tiro, per concludersi con un tranquillo «Dopo che fu trascorso il tempo che si è detto, morirono serenamente a conclusione di una felice vecchiaia». Sembrerebbe dunque, dal tono e dall'andamento, una favola con tanto di happy ending. Ma la trama si aggroviglia sin dal principio, dal momento in cui quello stesso Antioco, per tenersi accanto la bellissima figlia - con la quale continua, dopo averla violentata, a commettere incesto -, pone indovinelli irrisolvibili e fatali ai potenziali mariti di lei. E si complica ancora di più quando sulla scena compare Apollonio, che all'indovinello risponde senza esitazione denunciando la verità. La narrazione si fa dunque avvincente e drammatica, piena di avventure e di meraviglia: tempeste, naufragi, pirati e bordelli; morti apparenti e riconoscimenti. Tutti questi ingredienti fanno della "Historia Apollonii regis Tyriun romanzo", l'ultimo dei tre in latino che conosciamo, dopo il Satyricon di Petronio e le Metamorfosi di Apuleio. L'opera appartiene a una tradizione narrativa di ascendenza ellenistica, quella del romanzo serio-idealizzato, del quale sembra costituire un'evoluzione che può essere definita «romanzo di virtù morali». L'Apollonio esalta infatti «le virtù morali dei personaggi e la contrapposizione fra bene e male», ed è «come se l'ideale classico del kalos kai agathos, che sancisce l'equivalenza fra bellezza e nobiltà, fosse stato sostituito da quello dell'agathos kai sophos, che associa la nobiltà all'istruzione». Dietro alla Storia, popolarissima nel Medioevo e nel Rinascimento, già si sentono le voci di Chaucer e di Shakespeare: il quale la trasferirà, cambiando solo i nomi e aggiungendovi il genio, in uno dei suoi più grandi drammi romanzeschi: Pericle, Principe di Tiro.
