I commensali vi partecipano secondo una sequenza che prevede prima il mangiare, poi il bere e, in ultimo, il piacere. Il piacere che si condivide può essere il godimento erotico, accompagnato da canti, danze, schermaglie o giochi di abilità a sfondo amoroso, oppure il piacere intellettuale, sublimato nell'alta conversazione, centrale nella tradizione platonica e filosofica in genere. Anche la posizione dei commensali nel simposio ha un grande ruolo: c'è infatti il banchetto 'seduto'di Omero e il banchetto 'sdraiato su letti', che viene dall'Oriente. E c'è il banchetto a Roma, dove prevalgono le grandiose cene, da quella di Nasidieno a quella di Trimalcione, con autentiche grandi abbuffate.
