DJ spine sunned. Light edgewear. ; Loeb Classical Monographs; 0.39 x 9.06 x 5.91 Inches; 216 pages; The Greek orator Dio Chrysostom is a colorful figure, and along with Plutarch one of the major sources of information about Greek civilization during the early Roman Empire. C. P. Jones offers here the first full-length portrait of Dio in English and, at the same time, a view of life in cities such as Alexandria, Tarsus, and Rhodes in the first centuries of our era. Skillfully combining literary and historical evidence, Mr. Jones describes Dio's birthplace, education, and early career. He examines the civic speeches for what they reveal about Dio's life and art, as well as the life, thought, and language of Greek cities in this period. From these and other works he reinterprets Dio's attitude toward the emperors and Rome. The account is as lucid and pleasantly written as it is carefully documented.

Very slight shelfwear to DJ else fine. ; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation, from 1952 onwards, of the first Greek establishment in the West, Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early, and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore, the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there, which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery, the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity. ; 0.63 x 8.82 x 5.67 Inches; 200 pages

Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) was born in Neubukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany) but was a world-traveler as a treasure hunter and pioneer archaeologist. An advocate of the historical reality of places mentioned in the works of Homer, he became the first important excavator of Troy and of the Mycenaean sites Mycenae and Tiryns. Schliemann brought dedication, enthusiasm, conviction a large fortune, and a great deal of luck to the work. His personal history is quite fascinating. At the Tiryns excavation he worked with Wilhelm Dorpfeld (1853-1940) a German architect, best known for his contributions to classical archaeology, and the wonderful drawings in this volume. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Studies in Ancient Civilization; 226 pages; Athenian Politics examines the limitations and problems attendant upon the use of traditional sources to understand Athenian history. Presenting, in translation, virtually all the sources from which scholars have drawn their conclusions about ancient Athenian society--from contemporary accounts and stone inscriptions to Egyptian papyri--Stanton challenges the way scholars have viewed ancient Athens. Covering the period from the reforms of Solon to the constitutional changes of Kleisthenes, Athenian Politics explores democracy's paradoxical emergence from the actions of an undemocratic noble elite.

To say this book is innovative, challenging and has far-reaching consequences in the field of archaeology, would be an understatement. Accompanying an exhibition held in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens (July-November 1999) this is a unique study of the eating and drinking habits, health, disease and medicine of the Mycenaean and Minoan civilisations. It is based on the most up-to-date scientific techniques testing residues from ceramic vessels (cups, bowls, storage jars, both decorated and plain) , married with analysis of faunal, plant, and molluscan remains from excavations, iconographic and written sources, and human remains. It is rare in archaeology to be able to answer questions posed with a yes or no answer and provide scientific proof at the same time. Did they drink beer at Myrtos? Yes! Did they eat meat and vegetable stew at Chania? Yes! Was retsina really discovered in the Greek Bronze Age? Yes! The methods, approach and findings from this project, which is still in progress, have far-reaching significance both within and outside an Aegean context. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 287 pages
Review of book tipped in. Dustjacket has faint creasing; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works, Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures, exploring the contradictions between the archaic, primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider, flouting accepted standards of behavior, while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals, is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides, Euripides, and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues, flaws, and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators, the people of Athens.

"Knight, Henry Gally (1786?1846), architectural writer and antiquary... Between 1816 and 1830 he published a number of poems, including 'Ilderim, a Syrian Tale' (1816), which often drew inspiration from his earlier travels through Spain, Sicily, Greece, Egypt, and Palestine. Knight's poetry received mixed reviews from Byron, and in 1831 he turned his attention to the study of architecture."?(Oxford DNB).

New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong 4to. (19 x 31 cm). English Edition. 288 p., color ills. Iznik tiles and ceramics. In outlining the book, we decided to start by giving an account of the world famous Iznik tiles and ceramics through a brief history of the beautiful city that gave birth to the tiles and tile-making arts and industry. In the chapters that followed the historical account, we tried to provide brief informative accounts of tile production and tile designs to go on, afterwards, introducing Iznik tiles with their most beautiful examples which decorated many of the major buildings dating to the 15th and 16th centuries. Our tour of tiles includes both the tiles that were used in the walls of the buildings and Iznik ceramics that are currently exhibited in the museums and collections in the world. In the book, we tried to introduce the tile decorations that were frequently used in the architectural works of the period by classifying them in accordance with the buildings in which they were used. The chapters following the above mentioned accounts are reserved for the introduction of the list of skillfully produced ceramics in chronological order. Printed on coated paper, has a special binder and book jacket.

8vo grande. tela ed. in sovracop. 2572pp. Con i testi greci e latino a fronte. heavy international customers please inquire on shipping.
