New English Original cloth bdg. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). Edition in English. 326 p., color and b/w ills. The Iznik Tile Kiln Excavations (The second round: 1981-1988). Edited by Tülay Duran. "The progress taking place in the second round of excavations of Iznik tile kilns was starting point for the declaration of 1989 as 'The year of Iznik'. This object of this book is to provide a scholarly classification and presentation of the results of excavations that are product of eight years of effort. The finds turned up both in the first round of excavations (which began in 1964) and in the second have been eagerly awaited by Turkish and foreign art historians. We believe that the results of the work at Iznik will be an important source of information for the International Iznik Symposium that is to be held in Istanbul this year. A veil of mystery, reinforced by foreign sources, has shrouded Iznik tiles and pottery and led to a number of misinterpretations. We believe that through this book, that veil will be lifted for it proves -among other things- the error of such mistaken classifications as 'Miletos ware', 'Damascus ware', and 'Rhodes [Rhodos] ware' while at the same time in reveals the connection between Iznik ceramics manufacture and Seljuk ceramic manufacture, a fact of importance from the standpoint of the continuity of Turkish culture...". (From preface by Isil Aybakgil). One of 500 copies.

"On the brink of a life-changing decision, Alexis Fielding longs to find out about her mother's past. But, Sofia has never spoken of it. All she admits to is growing up in a small Cretan village before moving to London. When Alexis decides to visit Crete, however, Sofia gives her daughter a letter to take to an old friend, and promises that through her she will learn more. Arriving in Plaka, Alexis is astonished to see that it lies a stone's throw from the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga - Greece's former leper colony. Then, she finds Fortini, and at last hears the story that Sofia has buried all her life: the tale of her great-grandmother Eleni and her daughters and a family rent by tragedy, war and passion. She discovers how intimately she is connected with the island, and how secrecy holds them all in its powerful grip." Book

It is a welcome addition to the existing literature on the subject of ancient Indian history in general, and on that of the early Indian numismatics in particular." - Foreword. 8vo 304 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. New book. CLASSICAL STUDIES. Wily Odysseus. Bold Achilles. Brave Hektor. Beautiful Helen of Troy. For centuries, people around the world have been fascinated by these figures and their tragic war as recounted in Homer's Iliad, long admired and studied as one of the foremost epic poems of the ancient world. In The Iliad as Politics, Dean Hammer revisits this epic with a new perspective. In this first full-length treatment of the Iliad as a work of political thought, Hammer demonstrates how Homer's epic is also an ancient Greek discussion on political ethics. Hammer redefines political thought as the activity of addressing issues of collective identity and organization. Using this understanding of politics, he discusses how the characters in the Iliad, through their larger-than-life actions and interactions, embody community issues of authority, conflict, judgment, and the interrelationship between personal and collective identity. The characters' many quarrels, laments, reconciliations, and vows of loyalty and friendship all critically model the principles and controversies of underlying Greek political ethics of communal responsibility and relationship. Much of modern Western political thought focuses on classical Greek discussions of political philosophy. Hammer demonstrates that the Iliad constitutes another such ancient Greek political discussion. Dean Hammer is the John W. Wetzel Professor of Classics and Professor of Government at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is the author of The Puritan Tradition in Revolutionary, Federalist, and Whig Political Theory: A Rhetoric of Origins and The Iliad as Politics: The Performance of Political Thought. "I applaud Hammer's effort to read the Iliad as, among other things, the first document of political thought in Greek literature and history. No such work exists at present." -Kurt Raaflaub, Professor of Classics and History Brown University "A rare treat: an engagement with Homer as a political thinker by a political theorist thoroughly versed both in the primary texts and the scholarship on epic poetry and in the period when the polis was emerging." -Walter Donlan author of The Aristocratic Ideal in Ancient Greece (Key Words: Iliad, Homer, Dean Hammer, Politics, Political Thought, Classical Studies). Volume 28 in Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture.

"In 1821, in the geographically small but culturally and historically rich country of Greece, a revolution began to overturn four terrible centuries of slavery the Greeks had endured under the Ottoman Turks. This historical novel...l recalls the first year of the revolt..a panoramic view of the conflict through the stories of a variety of characters, including a village priest grief-stricken over the killing of his Turkish neighbors; a guerilla captain leading a band of wild mountain fighters against the Turkish garrisons; the wife of Prince Petrobey of the Mani, embittered by the fighting that takes the lives of her sons; a sea captain commanding the smaller Greek brigs in brilliant forays against the larger Turkish frigates; and a scribe to the legendary General Kolokotronis. Each character provides a defining perspective on the small but fierce conflict that altered the course of European history. Book
