It gives an account of the expedition of the Ten Thousand an army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to help him seize the throne of Persia from his brother Artaxerxes II in 401 BC. Text in Greek and Latin. Quarto: lix 598 p. with a color folding frontispiece map. In a one-half brown calf over marbled paper binding with gilt and blind stamping four raised bands and yellow endpapers. The binding has been expertly rebacked with the remaining portions of the spine laid down and restoration to the corners. The Greek text appears in the upper part of the page the latin translation by Johannes Leunclavius 1533 - 1593 below. Leather over the joints is split or splitting. Ink owner's name and price paid to the front free end paper - Geo. Weller 00=08=00. His name also to the title page where someone in the past has tried to remove it or hide it there are paper remains and thins and holes to the page. It also appears that the name has been removed from the upper outer corner of page 1. Some pages are lightly browned. End papers are also browned. hardcover

He was also a student and friend of Socrates and is considered to be one of the best writers of antiquity. This is his partially fictious biography of Cyrus the Great. The Greek and the later Latin translation have been revised and corrected by Thomas Hutchinson based on reviewing the Codex manscript at Oxford. This volume is printed in Greek and Latin. It includes a full page engraved frontispiece and one folding map showing Persia and the Middle East. Rebacked with modern leather spine over the original full leather boards. Black and gilt title label to spine reading simply: "Xenophontis." Gilt devices rules and raised bands to spine. Modern headbands original endpapers and modern linen cloth strips reinforcing both hinges. Wear and rubbing to boards corners and edges. Bookplate of George Benson Weston to front pastedown along with his ownership signature.
