At the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, almost every European nation was a monarchy, most linked by close family ties to her and Edward VII, the "uncle of Europe". Prior to the outbreak of World War I, the personal relationships of Edward, and of his successor and son, George V, flourished with the other royal families of Europe. The closeness of the European families was violently interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1914, and the armistice of 1918 brought three empires, namely Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia, crashing down. Some monarchies were strengthened, and others weakened beyond repair. In this well-researched study, John Van der Kiste has drawn upon previously unpublished material for the Royal Archives, Windsor, to show the realtionships between the crowned heads of Europe in the first part of the 20th century. His account sheds new light on foreign policy leading up to World War I. Book
[The Romantic Novels of Barbara Cartland. Vol. 1] Barbara Cartland's facsimile signature on title page on each book."As a minor member of the Greek Royal Family in exile in England, beautiful young Princess Giona knows her Fate only too well. One day she is to marry for duty to her country rather than for love. But to her horror, destiny comes calling far too soon when by Queen Victoria's Royal Command she must marry the ageing and unpleasant King of the Balkan State of Slavonia in order to prevent it being swallowed up by its powerful neighbours, Austria and Germany." Fine Romanian Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In Romanian and a small abstract in English. 300 p. Criza dinasticâ din România, (1925-1930).= The dynastic crisis in Romania, (1925-1930). The first signs of a serious institutional impasse, an event commonly referred to as the "Crisis of succession", may be applied between 1918-1919, when Prince Carol, the eldest son and heir of King Ferdinand - who was in love with Ioana (Zizi) Lambrino - was ready to give up his powers as a successor of the Romanian Crown. Although the question of the succession to the throne was governed with great efforts in 1881 by Ferdinand's appointment as successor to the Crown, the constitutional order of the country knows in the third decade of the last century, an unprecedented stalemate, a result of the Crown Prince Carol's decision to withdraw from the order of succession. Decision of the Council held in Sinaia, on December 31st, 1925, on the question of giving up the throne would lead to the convening of the two Houses of Parliament for January 4th, 1926. Patriarch Miron Cristea was to be involved in the major events that have ridden the Romanian political stage in 1925 and 1927, on the occasion of the so-called "dynastic crisis", as a witness and adviser, and then, with the establishment of the Regency, as a member of it, alongside Prince Nicolae, the younger son of King Ferdinand I and Gheorghe Buzdugan, the President of the High Court of Justice and Cassation.
