Partito per il fronte greco-albanese nel 1941 e poi nel 1942 per la Russia il protagonista di questa storia rappresenta la dolorosa esperienza di un sopravvissuto a due campagne e anni di prigionia. Renato Salza era un soldato della divisione "Sforzesca" richiamato il 20 gennaio del 1941 nel 53° reggimento di fanteria "Umbria". Il reggimento raggiunse il fronte greco-albanese partecipando ai combattimenti di Mali Scindeli, Mali Trebescines, Klisura. Il 9 aprile dopo quarantadue giorni di linea, il plotone di Salza venne finalmente posto a riposo e spostato nelle retrovie a Cascisti. Di 180 uomini erano rimasti solamente in 38. A luglio, dopo le ultime operazioni, l'unità rientrò a Biella. Il 26 giugno del 1942 Salza partì per la Campagna di Russia inquadrato nell'ARMIR. A Natale dopo la ritirata della "Sforzesca", il soldato, con altri compagni, venne catturato e internato nel campo di concentramento 54/4 di Kamenka dal quale rientrerà solamente nel 1948.
