Particolare carta raffigurante: parte dell'Albania occupata dal Bacha di Scutari, il Distretto dei Montenegrini e parte dei territori della Repubblica di Venezia e di Ragusa. Dal cartiglio apprendiamo che si tratta di una carta "pour servir de renseignements à la Carte des Limites des trois Empires ou Thèatre de la guerre presente". Quest'ultima, stampata a Vienna, è una grande carta in tre fogli (670x1490 mm complessivi) in cui, nel cartiglio nell'estremo angolo in basso a sinistra, si legge appunto "à cette Carte générales se trouvent annexées plusieurs autres Cartes particulieres des Contrées les plus intéressantes, sur une plus grande echelle". Ramadan Sokoli was an Albanian ethnomusicologist, musician, composer and writer. He is regarded as one of the most distinguished scholars of the Albanian and Balkan music. Ramadan Sokoli was born on June 14, 1920 in Shkodër. He graduated from the elementary and highschool of Shkodër before moving to Florence to study musicology. After World War II he created and became the head of the department of musical folklore. Sokoli is considered to be a pioneer of Albanian ethnomusicology. His work on Ottoman music modes and practices in Balkan music has been regarded as one of the most important ones on the subject.

Albania, that remote, unknown land, has found its voice in the novels of Kadare. In this one . he takes as his subject the shattering impact of World War II as that cataclysm is lived by a small, immensely sensitive boy. After centuries of bondage to the Turks of the Ottoman Empire, Albania falls to the invading Italian fascists, then the Greeks, the Italians again, then the Nazi hordes. Amid floods, British bombing, the action of partisans, the boy undergoes another kind of turbulence, that of growing up, the inner and outer experience ringing strange harmonies. He responds to the beauty of unattainable women, to witchcraft, literature, and later, when he is evacuated from his "stone city" to peasant and village life. Now his existence will be "marvelous, terrifying and extraordinary." Instead, it is primitive, barbaric, a world where the severed arm of a British airman becomes a talisman and "deflowered" girls disappear, possibly murdered by their fathers.
