ill., br. L'itinerario della Via Francigena iniziò ad affermarsi quando il re longobardo Rotari ripristino una vecchia strada romana, stabilendo cosi un'importante via di comunicazione. Dopo la cacciata dei Longobardi da parte dei Franchi, divenne nota come "Via Francigena o Romea". In seguito al passaggio di Sigerico, molti cristiani iniziarono a effettuare pellegrinaggi verso la Città Santa. Non solo credenti, ma anche mercanti e uomini di culture diverse che andavano e venivano verso Roma a portare le proprie esperienze e acquisirne di nuove. L'itinerario descritto in questa guida interessa il territorio senese per una lunghezza di circa 170 chilometri, (escluso la passeggiata per Siena e i due percorsi facoltativi), suddiviso in sei tappe per semplificarne la percorrenza e renderlo fruibile a tutti. Non presenta grandi difficoltà per quanto riguarda i dislivelli, anche se potrebbe presentarsi impegnativo per la lunghezza delle tappe. Per tutte le tappe e allegata una cartina e viene riportato un approssimativo tempo di percorrenza, la lunghezza, i dislivelli, la difficoltà e sono evidenziati i luoghi di maggior interesse.

Scrivere è un'arte: sicuramente ispirazione, creatività, e anche un pizzico di "follia" rappresentano una marcia in più per ogni artista, e soprattutto per uno scrittore per ragazzi. Dopotutto, ogni artista è un po' bambino, e ogni bambino è un po' artista. Tuttavia queste doti da sole non sono sufficienti: la scrittura è anche artigianato; studio e pratica permettono di acquisire una certa abilità, così come la conoscenza dei "ferri del mestiere" dello scrittore. Non dimentichiamo che Picasso era un maestro della geometria e della pittura "classica" e per questo riuscì a stravolgerne le regole con cognizione di causa, realizzando capolavori che hanno fatto un pezzo di storia dell'arte".
