186941914San Jose: W. Vallance Gray & C.B. Gifford for George H. Hare 1869. Lithograph. A sweeping lithographic bird’s-eye view of San José in 1869 portraying the young city and its grid of streets amid the fertile orchards and farmlands.

The present view was published at the time when rail links had begun shaping San José's role in the region: the San Francisco & San José Railroad was completed to the city in 1864 opening markets and drawing the valley into integration with coastal commerce. Lithographed by C. B. Gifford and W. Vallance Gray the print presents San José from an elevated vantage with its street grid courthouse square and church spires set amid orchards vineyards and irrigated fields. Tree-lined lanes and farmhouses ripple into the countryside; in the center distance the path of a railway is indicated tracing the route north while the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek wind through the fertile landscape. Founded in 1777 and briefly the state capital 1849-1851 San José was entering a new phase by 1869. The railroad's arrival in 1864 catalyzed population and agricultural expansion; by the late 1860s the city had become the commercial hub for orchards of prunes peaches apricots pears cherries and apples. In the surrounding hills the New Almaden quicksilver mercury mines continued as an economic anchor serving the mines of California's gold and silver belts. The present image serves as a documentary record of the moment when San José's agricultural and cultural ascendancy took shape.

Peters California on Stone p 126; Reps Views and Viewmakers of Urban America 374. 16-5371Santa Monica: Mirage Editions 1983. . Ten color serigraph on thick paper. 69 x 61.1 x cm. One of 250 pencil signed and numbered impressions.Reference: Robert Walker & Jeffrey Book "The Art of Patrick Nagel" page 156 no. 34.Prints.com:Patrick Nagel was born November 25 1945 in Dayton Ohio but was brought up in the Los Angeles area where he spent most of his life. He studied art at Chouinard Art Institute and in 1969 received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University at Fullerton. Nagel first put his talents to work as a freelance artist; then in 1971 he joined ABC-TV where he produced television graphics for promotion and news broadcasts. After a year he returned to freelance assignments accepting commissions for art prints and posters from major corporations and magazines including IBM MGM Universal Studios Playboy Architectural Digest Rolling Stone Oui and Harpers.Beginning in 1976 Patrick Nagel began contributing regularly to Playboy which extended the exposure and popularity of "the Nagel woman" to a huge and loyal audience. In 1978 he created his first poster image for Mirage Editions. He also painted the cover of rock group Duran Duran's Rio album which became the number one album in the world. During his lifetime Nagel's art prints and posters were exhibited in several one-man shows; his first exhibition of painting sold out within fifteen minutes. His posters have been collected by such prestigious institutions as the Library of Congress the Oakland Museum and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at U.C.L.A. Permanent collections of his work are housed at the Bibliotheque des Arts Decoratifs paris and the Smithsonian Institution. The feeling of Patrick Nagel's art prints and posters are reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints as well as of Art Deco styling yet it is completely contemporary and universal in appeal. Starting from a photograph he would create a simplified drawing the translate the drawing to a painting -- always "simplifying working to get more across with fewer elements." Bold dark lines shape perspective out of flat cool colors and stark white spaces; the result is what some have described as fantasy realism. Santa Monica: Mirage Editions, 1983. unknown
1939183422Chicago: The University of Chicago Press 1939. Presentation copy to a fellow philosopher First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Professor Alonzo Church with cordial regards Ernest Nagel". Church 1903-1995 taught philosophy and mathematics at Princeton from 1920 to 1967 where he made major contributions to mathematical logic and theoretical computer science. He worked closely with Nagel professor at Columbia University and the pair edited The Journal of Symbolic Logic from 1940 to 1945. In his Principles "Nagel defended the frequency interpretation of probability. He made however a sustained effort to survey the various alternatives and to deal with many of the problems that have been raised about the frequency interpretation. He was perhaps the first American philosopher to call serious attention to the important method of arbitrary functions in probability theory that began with Poincaré and was extended by Eberhard Hopf George D. Birkhoff and others. This approach based on relatively straightforward principles of physical symmetry as in the case of roulette or coin-flipping provided a detailed account of observed probabilistic phenomena as recorded in relative frequencies" ANB. Octavo. Original blue wrappers front cover lettered in black. Inscription "Nagel" to spine. Wrappers worn front cover splitting at head spine a little sunned. A good copy. unknown
