This is a German edition of this title. Karl Baedeker 1801-1959 was born in Essen and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. Lacking title-page tail of upper joint has a small tear; otherwise good. § Sixth edition revised and augmented. Title page was likely lost as some weary traveler carelessly opened the facing fold-out map time and time again while planning an excursion. The maps and travel plans are meant to aid the traveler so as to make him independent and thus the captain of his own voyage immune to the tricks and traps that befall the average tourist and equipped with up-to-date insider information to thoroughly immerse oneself in the attractions of the country being explored.
