The three brothers were trying to rebuild the company after the war with limited means. Apparently some text on page 62 of " Leipzig " was altered after the Soviet authorities protested. Seventh edition. pp. lii 344 15 engraved views including frontispiece 2 folding maps at rear 9 town plans some minor spotting on a few pages previous owner's stamp and initials on title-page; publisher's original yellow pictorial Biedermeier boards worn and rubbed along spine and extremities; otherwise a very good attractive copy.<br /> A good example of an early Baedeker edition.<br /><br />This was the last edition to have the title "Rheinreise" following editions were published as "Rheinlande".This series first started by Roehling in 1828 and then published by Baedeker in 1832 was one of the longest running series 34 editions from 1832 to 1931. Maps include Strasburg Frankfurt and Bonn. The attractive views include Schloss zu Heidelberg and Cologne. Eighth edition. pp. xvi 508 12 maps 32 plans vi 258 6 maps 17 plans slight spotting throughout; publisher's original old type red cloth gilt partly split along one edge of spine; otherwise a very good copy.<br /> This is an extremely rare volume covering South-West and North East Germany as well as Austria Italy and part of Denmark. <br /><br />This is the first part of this detailed guide which covers Austria South West Germany Venice and Lombardy. This volume also contains the second part which is very rarely seen. The second part covers Hannover Hamburg and Copenhagen. According to Hinrichsen this "second part" covering Central and Northern Germany was never published. The first part covering Italy and Austria appears occasionally but this "second part" rarely does. It was issued only a year after the seventh edition 1857. <br /><br />Maps include Berlin Breslau Dresden Hannover Hamburg Copenhagen and Danzig. This volume is the first version with the 'Clubausgabe' on the titlepage. Austria is also included in this volume along with the Sudetenland which had been annexed by Germany and named 'The Proctectorate of Bohemia and Moravia' and the Memel territory which was regained from Lithuania. This copy also contains the extremely rare general road map issued by DDAC which was issued loose with the book but is usually missing. The map with this copy also has the publisher's original covers. This copy also contains a rare publisher's slip indicating that Austria part of Czechoslovakia part of Lithuania and Bohemia have been added since the last edition. <br />Endpapers dated 'Mai 1939'.<br /> Hinrichsen D256.
