Approximately 10000 notified desertions and other absences by seamen during the period 1852-1900. Notices taken from the New South Wales Government Gazette and the New South Wales Police Gazette. Most named were straightforward deserters though a small minority were described as stragglers strays and absentees or as being AWOL. Up to 1864 all desertions reported occurred in NSW mainly Port Jackson but from 1864 notices of Victorian desertions began to appear with other colonies and New Zealand and Fiji following.
