187458351Adelaide: Government Printer 1874. Fine. Adelaide Government Printer 1874. Foolscap folio 1 page. Drop-title; four small holes in the left-hand margin where stab-sewn when bound now disbound; a fine copy. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 120 of 1874. A highly critical report compiled by Thomas Reynolds on his official trip to the Northern Territory as Commissioner of Crown Lands the previous year; he was in the Territory from 17 May to 11 June 1873 and this report is dated 16 July of that year. His paper hits the table with a bang - "there is not a building belonging to Government that can be considered creditable except the Telegraph offices and they are facing the wrong way" - and gets louder. 98784An attractive calligraphic testimonial visible image size 390 × 260 mm in blue ink on a two-tone blue background within a decorative gilt border was signed by nine senior members of the congregation and presented to the outgoing Honorary Secretary. It is surmounted by a large ornamental scroll a mass of wattle blossom and a large vignette illustration of a paddle steamer towing a heavily-laden barge on the River Murray. The copious amounts of dirty smoke belching forth are starkly realistic - an unexpected bonus on an otherwise routine production. The work is signed 'Niehuus & Lucy Adelaide'; we are unsure when they commenced work together but the partnership was dissolved four months after this commission was completed. Minimal foxing and light surface blemishes do not detract from this charming period piece recently mounted and matted ready for framing. unknown

The ownership signature of Arthur Searcy 1913 is written in pencil on each title page. Arthur Searcy 1852-1935 was Controller of Harbors from July 1911 and Chairman of the Harbors Board Committee until his retirement at the age of 65 information from the Searcy scrapbooks in the State Library of South Australia. He was the older brother of the more well-known Alfred 1854-1925. <p>Loosely inserted are retained duplicate typescripts of two letters in all four pages foolscap from Searcy as Chairman of the Board to the Minister of Marine regarding proposed works at Victor Harbor one page and Goolwa three pages. 1853100379Adelaide: W.C. Cox Printer 1853. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide W.C. Cox Printer 1853. Octavo 46 pages. Relatively recent quarter morocco and buckram by the Law Bindery Melbourne; title leaf a little foxed with minimal light scattered foxing to a few other leaves; an excellent copy with most interesting provenance see below. The author Clerk of the Executive Council of South Australia was on board the vessel; this is his account of the first successful navigation of the Murray as far as Swan Hill by Captain Francis Cadell. Fellow-passenger James Allen also published his version of events. Captain William Randell and his paddle-steamer 'Mary Ann' left Goolwa at the Murray mouth ahead of Cadell and travelled much farther up the Murray but Cadell overtook him en route and reached Swan Hill first. However both men deservedly earned the bonus of 2000 pounds offered by the South Australian Government 'for each of the first two steamers to travel up the Murray as far as the Darling junction' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. We have noted previously the manuscript correction page 5 line 4 'largest' to 'longest' river and presume it is in Kinloch's hand. At the head of the title page of this copy is the pencilled ownership name possibly his signature of Robert Wadsworth over-written in red ink by the subsequent owner 'John Shillinglaw from Robert Wadsworth 1854'. Shillingworth has annotated the text in both pencil and red ink three and seven pages respectively. The pencilling identifies the 'gentleman's son' working as a shepherd as 'old "Bigodd Macdonald"' and asks elsewhere of a sentence nine lines long 'what does this wretched twaddler mean' he's got a point too!. Robert Wadsworth was eventually Clerk of the Victorian Executive Council from 1875 to 1889; of passing interest to bibliophiles his son Arthur 1864-1931 was the first Commonwealth Parliamentary Librarian having 'charge of the Commonwealth library for over twenty-six years while also being titular head of the Victorian State parliamentary library' ADB. <p>John Joseph Shillinglaw 1831-1905 public servant and historian was the eldest son of the librarian of the Royal Geographical Society. 'He was to study under Captain John Washington eminent maritime surveyor and in 1852 he migrated with his father and brothers to Victoria arriving in October. From November he was chief clerk of petty sessions at Williamstown and in 1854 was appointed inspector and sometime acting superintendent of the Water Police. He was also secretary to the Steam Navigation Board until December 1857. In 1856-69 he was shipping-master for the Port of Melbourne and registrar of seamen; he helped to found the first Sailors' Home and did much to improve the working conditions of seamen'. It is hardly surprising that he should be given a copy of this book soon after its publication. He held various public service positions over the years; from 1885-94 he 'was secretary to the royal commission on vegetable products. He was also secretary to the Board of Viticulture. Shillinglaw was an enthusiast in whatever department he worked; however he is remembered for his association with colonial literature and history'. He was the author of numerous books and on his death his estate 'included a vast collection of papers and rare books' presumably including this item ADB. Ferguson 11196. W.C. Cox, Printer hardcover

1935141019Adelaide: The Hassell Press for the Author 1935. First Edition. Paperback. Fine. Adelaide The Hassell Press for the Author 1935. Octavo 16 pages with 6 illustrations. Saddle-stapled overlapping textured wrappers with a reproduction of the illustration on page 9 tipped in on the front cover; essentially a fine copy. Loosely inserted is a small slip of paper with the typed message 'All Souls' Tide'; this was also present in the only other copy of this booklet we have seen. The Adelaide newspaper 'The Advertiser' has a comprehensive account of the work on 10 January 1936 in an article headed 'Pioneer Memories Told In Rhyme'. 'Memories of pioneer personalities told in rhyme and rhythm have been revived by Miss Eva Roach under the nom de plume of "Cousin Silvia" in an attractively illustrated booklet "Homing." In nine short poems Miss Roach has told of some of the men and women who came from England nearly a century ago; of Grandpa Lovegrove who "was alive in eighteen hundred and thirty-five" and the story of the map in Grannie's house introduced by a reproduction of a quaint cottage in Berkshire where Ann Nightingale and all her ancestors and their descendants have lived since 1560 and Ann worked the map as "a child of 10 when George III ruled Englishmen." Pleasant Cottage at Penwortham revives memories of "Great Grandpa Lee and Horrocks the Explorer" while a picture of the last house at Land's End Cornwall illustrates the poem on the Cornishmen's lucky find "at Burra in 1845." Other short poems introduce the Duke of Edinburgh's visit in 1867 and Nilpena the home of Grandpa Lee'. The Hassell Press [for the Author paperback

The official report of the Royal Commission chaired by Justice Roma Mitchell which found that South Australian Police Commissioner Harold Salisbury had misled the state government with regard to personal files maintained by 'Special Branch' and that his dismissal was justified and legal. Offered together with a copy of the report of Acting Justice White which prompted the dismissal 'Special Branch Security Records. Initial Report to the Honourable Donald Allan Dunstan Q.C. LL.B. M.P. Premier of the State of South Australia' South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 145 of 1978; 82 pages; stapled as issued; some tanning and highlighting. <p>'For years questions had been raised as to whether some files kept by the Special Branch were political and sexual in nature. A January 1978 report found that they were. The crux of the matter was that Salisbury misled Dunstan twice about the files who in turn misled the parliament. Salisbury denied his accountability to the government and refused to resign. Dunstan's sacking of him was constitutionally justified though done so quickly that it sparked public outcry and demonstrations. A June 1978 royal commission report found that the dismissal was justifiable. While Dunstan was vindicated the criticism took a political and personal toll. In February 1979 he collapsed in the House during question time and resigned on the advice of his doctor' Australian Dictionary of Biography. D.J. Woolman, Government Printer paperback

1883208551883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". <br /> <br /> The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. <br /> <br /> The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. <br /> <br /> The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. <br /> <br /> An unusual survival. unknown
1888135488London: Wells Gardner Darton & Co 1888. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London Wells Gardner Darton & Co. 1888/ 1887 first edition published in Adelaide. Gilt-decorated cloth slightly rubbed; small paper label at the foot of the spine see below; edges and leaves adjacent to the boards a little foxed; overall an excellent copy. Pages ix-304 from the table of contents onwards are the sheets of the 1887 Adelaide edition. The first eight pages the cloth colour lettering and decoration for this London edition differ and it invariably contains the Woodburytype frontispiece portrait. The Woodburytype is derived from the original albumen paper photograph occasionally but not invariably found as the frontispiece in the Adelaide edition. The inkstamp of the Colonial Secretary's Office is on the verso of the frontispiece and at the end of the author's preface; the inkstamp of the Colonial Secretary's Office Library is on the title-page and explains the small label on the spine.
