Parliamentary Paper compiling correspondence and proceeding of public meetings relating to the restriction of Chinese immigration culminating in the the Intercolonial Conference on the Chinese Question held in Sydney from June 12 to 15 1888. The resolutions there had a profound and blighting influence on Australian immigration and directly lead to the formulation of the White Australia Policy following Federation in 1901. . Robt. S. Hindley Street from King William St.; No. 2. Hindley Street Looking East; No. 3 Rundle Street Looking East; with a variant second copy of No. 3 which is black & white. The images are held at the Art Gallery of South Australia; the State Library of New South Wales the National Library of Australia and some a the City of Adelaide. There are tinted lithographs some with a tinted border others not and black & white lithographs as well. The street images appear to be the same in all the recorded prints consistent with these four- there are some minor variations which are noted. The three tinted lithographs are mounted on polished cloth. The period cloth mounting is unusual. 1885ABC_49517Australia 1885. Folio ca. 44 x 36.5 cm. Contemporary gold-tooled black morocco with the title lettered in gold on the front gold-tooled turn-ins gilt edges watered-silk end papers. With 65 albumen prints. 29 ll. Late 19th-century photo album with views of New South Wales. The album contains 65 albumen prints of highlights in the region primarily in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. It was bought by the civil engineer Clément van de Velde dates unknown who was born in Belgium and moved to Australia in 1884 where he attempted to set up a sugar-beet industry. He also served as the vice-consul for Belgium. He gifted the album to his friend Cobus in 1885 possibly as a keepsake for a trip they undertook together.At least a third of the photographs show important buildings and other landmarks in Sydney including the Government House the Town Hall the General Post Office the Australian Museum the different colleges of the University of Sydney the Department of Lands building and the public library in Bent Street that has been demolished in 1967. Most of these buildings were relatively new at the time these photographs were taken. Also included are photographs of Hyde park and the Captain Cook monument the Man O'War steps Argyle cut Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the botanic gardens. The other photographs in the album show the towns and nature surrounding Sydney such as the Katoomba Falls the Three Sisters Govetts Leap and Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains the Zig Zag railway the Fitzroy Falls Fort Denison Broken Bay various views of the Nepean River as well as four portraits of Australian Aboriginals.With a contemporary French inscription on the verso of the first flyleaf "Mon cher Cobus Je prie de vouloir accepter cet album en souvenir de nos bons rapporte. Votre dévote Clément van de Velde. Sydney 10 may 1885.". The binding has been professionally restored the boards are somewhat scratched and dented. The leaves are warped and foxed the lower corners of some of the leaves are torn without affecting the photographs the photographs have somewhat discoloured. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Early half calf and marbled papered boards all edges and endpapers marbled with the spine extensively gilt-decorated in compartments with a contrasting title-label; leather a little rubbed at the extremities and bumped at the corners; marbled paper moderately rubbed and worn along the edges with slight loss to the rear cover; early leaves slightly marked; a binder's blank at the rear has an internal tear; overall a very presentable copy. The initial binder's blank is inscribed 'To Mrs Tennant With Mary Gardner's Kindest Love. North Terrace. 28 Augst 1862'. With more than a little help from the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' we have discovered this was a wedding present. On that day Rachael Christina Ferguson married a young Andrew Tennant 1835-1913 pastoralist and politician Tennant Creek is named after his father. One of their daughters Rosina Forsyth Tennant married the pastoralist William Tennant Mortlock yes genealogy is sometimes confusing. One of their children was John Andrew Tennant Mortlock 1894-1950 pastoralist and philanthropist. He was the State Library of South Australia's most significant benefactor and the Mortlock Wing is named after him. James Blackwood hardcover

Barkly KCB." Two dispatches from the Victorian parliament concerning the US Civil war. Titled "Copy of a Despatch from the Secretary of State relative to the disposal of the Naval Forces of Great Britain in the event of War and urging the completion of certain measures of Defence required in this Colony; also intimating that the Troops sent to New Zealand shall be forthwith returned" dated 26th December 1861. With the follow-up entitled "Copy of a Circular Despatch from the Secretary of State stating that the Question which threatened a War with the United States has been amicably settled: but pointing out the necessity of prompt and effectual preparation against contingencies." dated 22nd January 1862. Each a single sheet 8 1/4 x 14" printed one side on blue paper. The second blue paper with short closed tear at bottom not intruding into text. Government Printers unknown
1883208551883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". <br /> <br /> The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. <br /> <br /> The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. <br /> <br /> The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. <br /> <br /> An unusual survival. unknown

Uncut and sewn as issued; outer pages slightly dusty; light foxing throughout; an excellent copy. Great Britain and Ireland Parliamentary Paper Number 685 of 1838. The bulk of this important paper pages 4-19 is given over to 'Nos. 5 6 7. Copy of a Despatch from Governor Sir James Stirling bearing Date 15 October 1835 forwarding a Memorial from the Inhabitants of Western Australia; together with a Copy of the Answer which has been returned thereto'. It is somewhat more than that. Stirling's covering letter explains that 'The signatures attached to this memorial . belong to about one-third of the adult male population of the settlement and represent also about one third of its property in land and capital. The grievances under which the memorialists consider themselves and their fellow colonists to labour are five in number'. The five grievances are well-aired; all signatories are identified; there are five pages of lists of lands reserved for public purposes individuals or 'Assigned to or Reserved for Civil Naval and Military Officers from commencement of the Colony in June 1829 to 6 October 1835'. The second and third lists provide name rank or situation where applicable number of acres district assigned or reserved - and when and remarks. A sample record for an individual is that pertaining to Robert Ramsay for whom an 'uncertain' number of acres was reserved at Plantagenet on 12 April 1831: 'Master of brig "Britannia". On south shore of Princes Royal Harbour reserved 18 months to form a whaling establishment and then resumed on failure of conditions'. The last four pages in this section contain Lord Glenelg's thoughts on the matter as of 7 March 1837. The limited information relating to the fledgling colony of South Australia occupies only pages 20 and 21. Ferguson 2511. <p>Provenance: the signature 'C.A.S. Hawker' is written in pencil at the head of the first page. Charles Allan Seymour Hawker 1894-1938 politician and pastoralist: his grandfather George Charles Hawker arrived in Adelaide with his brother Charles in September 1840. They settled on land at Bungaree near Clare in December 1841; C.A.S. Hawker he was born there. He was seriously wounded on several occasions at the Western Front losing one eye and 'his legs were in surgical irons to the end of his life'. He was a minister in the Lyons Government from 1932 until he 'was killed on 25 October 1938 when the aircraft "Kyeema" crashed into Mount Dandenong in Victoria. His untimely death was sharply felt. He had been an outstanding and respected figure in the Federal parliament whom some of his own party would have supported as prime minister. Duodecimo 36 pages plus the pictorial title-cover and rear cover advertisement. Flush-cut card covers blue paper mounted on plain card originally sewn onto the text thread now missing; minor signs of use and age but nonetheless a decent copy with the contemporary ownership details of young 'Friedrich Busch 1873' in ink on the inside front cover. The outside rear cover lists nine titles including this one in Wickes' Educational Series for Australian Use. The works were 'specially compiled' by Edward Walter Wickes 1795-1868 'formerly Secretary to the Board of Education' who had also conducted his own school in North Adelaide in the 1840s and 1850s. A lengthy testimonial to him appeared in the 'South Australian Weekly Chronicle' 12 October 1867. In part it noted that 'he essayed to benefit the children of the working classes by the introduction of very cheap school books which he accomplished for he published books so cheap that the poorest were not debarred from purchasing them'. Despite the large numbers printed clearly there were at least 32000 of our title by 1871 and it appears to have still been published as late as 1891 copies of any edition are very scarce. Trove records a grand total of only five copies ranging from 1858 to 1891 with none from the 1870s. Printed and Published by David Gall paperback
