The author first travelled to New Guinea from Australia in 1899, where he travelled extensively throughout the British New Guinea, Papua, over a 14 year period, describing the peoples in detail, their customs, rituals, society, etc. The illustrations are quite good.

The author, a doctor and member of the Royal Society, travelled extensively in the south Pacific, east of Australia, and provides much detail on New Caledonia, New Hebrides and the aborigines of Australia. He provides two chapters on how he made the pictures used in the book and the difficulties a photographer had at that time. Taylor 414.
