Oltrepassato un fiume in secca, abbiamo proseguito fino alle due e, quando ormai disperavamo di trovare acqua, abbiamo scorto di fronte a noi, a una distanza di tre miglia, un fuoco acceso da neri (o meglio il fumo di un fuoco): siamo andati in quella direzione, ben sapendo che laddove c'erano negri, c'era anche acqua.
