1883208551883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger".

The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani.

The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883.

The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration.

An unusual survival. unknown

8vo [23 x 15 cm]; xxiv, 424 pp, frontis, 61 illustrations including many full-page, mostly from photos, 3 folding maps, some drawings, index. original pictorial cloth, gilt spine title lettering and gilt picture on front cover, top edge gilted, endpaper bookplate, no tears of maps, near fine and clean. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. An important book by one of the great botanical explorers and naturalists of the nineteenth century, the Italian botanist, spent time at Kew, where he met Charles Darwin, William Joseph Hooker and James Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak. The latter lead him to spending 3 years from 1865 to 1868 undertaking research in Sarawak, Brunei and other islands off present-day Malaysia and New Guinea, where he discovered many new species of palms, and many other plants such as a phosphorescent fungus that was bright enough to read a newspaper placed by it. Beccari was in Sarawak during 1865-67 where he collected over 800 bird skins including 40 not previously discovered of unrecorded species. He describes nature, the people, Dyaks and their customs in some detail, prior to the major impacts of the twentieth century, and describes his return to Sarawak some 20 years later, where he formed a botanical garden. He discovered the titan arum, the plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world, in Sumatra in 1878. This edition also contains the valuable and detailed appendix on the forests of Borneo, which are currently being logged to extinction. The preface is by naturalist F. H. H. Guillemard who also wrote a book of his travels in the area. The later reprint does not include the maps of the original.

250401915 1924 3 1925 3 and 1926 2. The nine items on letterheads of the metallurgy department of the National Physical Laboratory Teddington Middlesex. See his entries in the Oxford DNB and Australian Dictionary of Biography. The recipient George Kenneth Menzies 1869-1954 was Secretary to the Royal Society of Arts between 1917 and 1935. The nine items are in good condition lightly aged and are folded for postage. Each bears the stamp of the RSA some with manuscript docketting. Letters of 4 April and 18 September 1925 are in autograph the rest typed; all nine are signed ‘Walter Rosesnhain’. A letter of 1 October 1924 responds to a request for information about zirconium with reference to the ‘literature’ on the subject and British and American firms ‘interested in Zirconium products’. The rest of the correspondence is taken up with lecturing. The first item ANS 2 February 1915 is a covering note for ‘the synopsis of my forthcoming course of Cantor Lectures’. On 13 September 1924 Rosenhaim writes that he could ‘quite well give either one lecture or a course of three during the coming Autumn and Winter. The subject I habe in mind is the Inner Structure of Alloys on which I gave a Royal Institution Friday lecture last year. While it is possible to deal with the subject in a single lecture it would be much more satisfactory to give a course of three lectures upon it. The subject really relates to the X-ray study of crystal structures and its application to metallurgical problems and consitutes I think perhaps the most important metallurgical advance which has been achieved recently.’ He asks for a quick response as his ‘Winter engagements have a way of piling up during the year’. On 4 April 1925 he states that he has ‘mentioned the matter of Cantor lectures to one or two of my colleagues & I think either Mr. Higgins or one of the others might give a course on such a subject as “Thermometers†or possibly “High Vacua’ but before approaching them he would like to clarify the question of a fee. ‘I am also interested in the matter because although about a month has now elapsed since my recent course was finished I have received no fee & I am wondering whether a letter may have gone astray.’ The matter is presumably resolved as a few weeks later on 30 April 1925 he sends not present ‘a memorandum on the subject of a course to be entitled “Thermometry†by Mr W. F. Higgins of this Laboratory’ and mentions that ‘there is also a possible suggestion of a course entitled “The Production and Measurement of High Vacua†with experimental demonstrations by Dr G. W. C. Kaye’ both of which courses he thinks ‘would be very satisfactory for your Society but that of Dr Kaye would be particularly interesting and would I think attract a considerable audience as the whole problem of high vacua is becoming of every sic increasing importance in connexion with electric lamps and radio valves’. On 8 January 1926 he wonders whether Higgins’s communication with Menzies regarding a proposed lecture has also ‘gone astray’ and agrees to review ‘Sir Robert Hadfield’s book on Metallurgy’ for the RSA journal ‘provided that the review may be anonymous. I very much object to writing signed reviews’. On 11 February 1926 he asks for an offprint of a lecture by Sir Richard Paget: ‘I may be able to obtain a copy by asking Sir Richard Paget himself but I would prefer not to trouble him if it can be got from you.’ 1915, 1924 (3), 1925 (3) and 1926 (2). The nine items on letterheads of the metallurgy department of the National Physical Labor unknown
