A striking head and shoulder portrait of a Maori in New York wearing a Korowai or tag coat a white feather in his hair and lower chin Ta Moko or tattoo. It appears that this image is not recorded at the National Library of New Zealand. <br /> <br /> Charles Eisenmann was born in Germany and migrated to New York City around 1870 and opened his first photography studio six years’ later. He began specializing in theatrical and show business portraits and became acquainted with legendary showman and circus impresario P. T. Barnum whose human oddities or 'freaks' were a popular exhibit at his American Museum. The two came to an agreement where Mr. Eisenmann would photograph the unique performers so cards could handed out as promotion to the public.<br /> Mr. Eisenmann's images are noted for particularly being sharp clear and well-posed. adapted from Historiccamera dot com.<br /> <br /> It is unclear why Keewee was in NY but it was a common thread for tattooed individuals to pose for Eisenmann. Tattooing was banned by the NZ government in 1890 and it was not until 1962 that the ban was dropped. He is wearing a shirt tie and jacket underneath his cloak possibly something to do with missionary work. A beautifully constructed image in very good condition overall with slight oxidation around some edges of the verso and some light foxing in the background of the image. 4 1/8 x 2 1/4" The verso text- Chas. Portraits take by Instantaneous Process / Extra inducements to the Theatrical Profession. <br /> <br /> Syracuse University collection holds this image- "0078: Unidentified man with striped tattoos on face - recto: Bust view of an unidentified man with a tattoo of bold symmetrical lines on his chin and cheeks. He is wearing a coat with bow tie beneath what appears to be a fringed robe. He is identified on the card as a Maori man from Aotearoa.; verso text reads "KeeWee Maori / New Zealand." A search of the National Library of New Zealand's database for "carte de visite Maori" has 404 entries. Most are pictured and none appear to be the person illustrated on this carte de visite. Chas. Neate R73 <br> Mr. Ross was among the early mountaineers that sought the summit of Mount Cook considered one of the most daring and persevering of them all. There was both danger and hardship faced by any climber who sought the summit of Mount Cook. The weather on the west coast especially can be awful for fierce storms sweep up from the Tasman Sea that most tempestuous part of the Pacific whose twelve hundred miles furnished the twelve hundred reasons why New Zealand declined to enter the Australian Federation. The base of operations is distant for no alpine hotels and hardly any shelter huts had been built when Ross made the climb. The slopes and glens when one approaches the west coast are covered with so dense a growth of trees and shrubs that progress is always slow and difficult. 'In the late 1930s Warner designed a series of linocuts which were cut by his daughter and printed by his son. These works were signed "The Warners"' from the introduction by Roger Butler National Gallery of Australia to the catalogue of works by Warner published by Josef Lebovic Gallery in 2009. unknown

A rare care-de-visite portrait of Tawhiao c. 1822-1894 the 2nd Maori King who ".left a legacy of religious principles from which his people would draw a future dream for Tainui: the rebirth of a self-sufficient economic base supported by the strength and stability of the people. Native trees and foods symbolise strength and self-sufficiency in his statement: 'I shall build my own house the ridge-pole will be of hinau and the supporting posts of mahoe and patate. Those who inhabit that house shall be raised on rengarenga and nurtured on kawariki.' During Tawhiao's exile Waikato people had reflected and focused on the powerful symbols of the King movement. The man and the vision became united and part of the traditions and knowledge of the people. Glasgow on rear pastedown at corner a.e.g. occasional lifting a couple images w/ minor over-exposure occasional slight closed tears still a VG exemplar. This splendid Victorian Grand Tour album preserves 42 albumen photographs some a coterie of the best souvenir landscape and portrait photographers at the end of the 19th-Century including Elizabeth Pulman James Valentine G.W. Wilson and Samuel Poulton Poulton’s Series. The album opens with a photo of the Osbourne House which was the former royal residence on the Isle of Wight constructed between 1845-1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Philip; views Carlsbrooke Castle St. Thomas Church in Portsmouth St. Boniface Old Church rebuilt in the 11th Century and the Luccombe Chine scenic attraction south of the Village of Luccombe and the Shanklin Shine - oldest tourist attraction on Wight. Other photos include the South Parade Pier built originally 1875-1878 and designed by G. Rale as passenger ferry terminal The Pier Southsea Balmoral Castle from the river Balmoral from the NW two views of Inverness the Waterfall in Glen Ross; the Union Chain Bridge spanning the River Tweed; and the HMS St. Vincent 120-gun warship launched in 1815 lying at anchor in Portsmouth.The unidentified well-to-do family appear to have traveled to New Zealand around 1880 stopped over at Madeira with very large unidentified photograph featuring a cart & donkey with giant palm trees and subsequently sailed onto Fiji. Two of the albumen images here capture a Fijian Village scene as well as street scene in Siwa Fiji. Photos by Valentine include those of Auckland Harbour and Ragitoto from Remuera New Zealand as well as Lower Queen Street Scene and Lake Takapuna looking South. Interior and exterior shots of the Auckland Hospital are included with one demarcated as “Pulman Photo 153†the Auckland Hospital on the hill Bowling Club in the foreground and others. Elizabeth PUlman 1836-1900 is regarded as the first professional woman photographer in New Zealand who took over her husband George Pulman’s business and darkroom following his death in 1871. Of additional interest is the large albumen photograph of an mixed-race photo of a mining crew featuring South Asian along with Euro-caucasian counterparts standing beneath the towering structure behind. Two additional harbour photos are mounted as well as two additional images of a very well-dressed wedding party with bride and bridal party carefully posed. N.P., hardcover

New Zealand through a watercolourist's eyes A colourful record of travels in search of the picturesque including views of lakes Wakatipu Wanaka Rotoma and Te Anau as well as depictions of cattle and sheep stations and settlements. The unidentified traveller evidently ventured via Tasmania for the album opens with paintings of Hobart town mistakenly identified as in New Zealand and its harbour. The finest watercolour is a sweeping double-page panorama of Te Anau framed against the mountainous horizon. At Wakatipu the artist both drew from the shore and on a steamer in the middle of the lake. Their attention to natural scenery for example a waterfall in the Rees Valley is matched by their ability to capture the feel of New Zealand's prospering settlements. One painting shows Thompson's Station established beside Lake Wanaka in 1859 while another documents a flourishing homestead near Nelson. Landscape octavo. With card leaves 19 full-page watercolours watercolour spanning double-page spread 16 illustrations with pencilled caption. Original black quarter roan sketchbook rebacked with original spine laid down spine and boards tooled in gilt grey cloth sides black band. Contemporary inscription "Hamond Fakenham". 1931186740Auckland: Wilson & Horton Ltd 1931. Thank God for the navy A photographic tribute to the Royal Navy and its response to New Zealand's deadliest natural disaster. Under the captaincy of de Meric 1887-1943 HMS Diomede sped to Napier with emergency supplies and medical personnel and its crew took charge of clearing rubble recovering bodies distributing aid and comforting survivors. The earthquake also known as the Napier Earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and virtually levelled the town. Together with HMS Dunedin Diomede arrived at 8:30 am on 4 February their crews working solidly until 9 February. The front cover thanks de Meric for "his generous assistance to members of the staff of 'The New Zealand Herald' and 'The Auckland Weekly News'" both papers operated by Wilson & Horton Limited. The press photographs show both scenes of terrible destruction and the rescue efforts. De Meric's loosely inserted reports chronicle the multi-day operation in detail. De Meric retired in 1940 at the rank of read-admiral his command in 1931 being a high point in a successful naval career that also saw him awarded the MVO. Landscape album 185 x 300 mm. With 71 gelatin silver photographs 70 x 125 mm to 170 x 215 mm and manuscript note all mounted on black card leaves. With loosely inserted material: photograph inscribed on verso "M. J. C. de M. with film star Madeleine Carroll"; 6 duplicate typescript reports by de Meric each single sheet 300 x 205 mm and signed at foot fastened with pin at top left; 2 duplicate typescript copies each 3 sheets 330 x 205 mm of contemporary report on the Royal Navy's contribution to rescue efforts. 1864037558London: War Office 1864. Recently professionally rebound in green stamped goatskin raised bands and marbled boards. 158pp xxiii-xxvii xxi xxi-xxvi. Consisting of the original 128pp of text and 19 hand coloured folding maps with xxipp of Appendices. In addition there are 5 Addendums extending the journals from the 8th September through to the 6th May 1865. These continue the pagination from pages128 to 158 and include a further 5 folding coloured maps. Prior to the appendices which are numbered I - XVI in the contents are 5pp of additional numbered XVIII and XIX along with 6pp afterwards with appendix numbers XVII XVIII XIX and XX and date up to May 1865. Dominic Jacotin Gamble took up the post of deputy quartermaster-general in 1861 on the staff of Lieutenant General Duncan Cameron in New Zealand he had overall responsibility for the transport movement and quartering of troops. Before the campaign began Gamble made careful preparations and during the operations of 1863-64 took great pains to ensure the efficient functioning of the supply system. He acted decisively and effectively when the flow of supplies to the army was threatened by Maori attacks on traffic along the Great South Road. These journals and accompanying maps were produced to aid the logistics of the military operations and as such were confidential indeed these are marked as such. The maps were produced and lithographed at the Topographical Depot of the War office credited to Colonial Sir Henry James and printed with the facsimile signature of Gamble. The condition is very good some professional repairs to a number of the maps and the margins of a few pages a clean bright example of what appears to be an exceptionally scarce work especially with the later added journals.
