These not only offered the 5th Group pilots night flying training but also sharpened and honed the skills of the CAC groups in the 64th Artillery coordinating targeting and their searchlights hunting for possible enemy aircraft. The photos depict the entire Battery C personnel weaponry and several of night firing in conjunction with the searchlights. There he met Dwight and was eventually housed and tutored by relative Timothy Dwight IV then president at Yale College and a founder of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Today ʻŌpūkahaʻia is best known as one of the first Hawaiians to convert to Christianity and an early translator of the Hawaiian language into English. His desire to become a missionary was among the inspirations for the opening of the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall Connecticut which published this posthumous biography. It was issued with a sermon delivered at ʻŌpūkahaʻia's funeral by Lyan Beecher and three other pieces related to the founding of the Foreign Mission School. The images are laid down on 28 pages. 30 show Japanese scenes or subjects 30 of Hawaii 4 of San Francisco 7 of Los Angeles 3 of Chicago 7 of New York 14 of Canada and a final quite artistic image of clouds at sunset or sunrise. Many are original silver gelatin privately taken photographs while some are postcards or commercially produced. Each photograph is neatly captioned in ink in English. The name I.B. Jones dated 1922 is neatly written in ink inside the upper cover. The cloth covered album is largely missing the morocco covering at the corners and along the spine and there is a gouge in the upper board but the binding is still sound. Top edge gilt. The photographs show some occasional silvering or fading but are overall in good to very good condition. 25 x 34cm. The Japanese photographs in this album were taken mainly in the Tokyo-Yokohama area and include some nice images of people and street scenes taken in Yokohama. . hardcover

An absorbing collection of photographs capturing American military life in Hawaii during the first half of the 20th century with the great majority of the photographs captioned in ink on the album pages. The unnamed photographer and compiler of the photographs apparently served at the Schofield Barracks in Honolulu as he includes several photographs of the base including the "Boxing Bowl." He also records other notable locations around Honolulu including the Waipahu Sugar Mill the Kilaeua Crater Japanese Temple the Mid-Pacific Railway wreck Kapiolani Park the Honolulu railway station Sand Island the naval destroyer JEANNE D'ARC Sampans Haleiwa Bay the Monoa Hotel the Waipahi Sugar Mill Diamondhead and Kahala Bay Waikiki Beach several shots of volcanoes and lava formations and more. He even includes a shot of the pack mule he presumably used in his wanderings. 18803796<p><b>Scarce Chart of Oahu: Pearl Harbor to Diamond Head</b></p><p>This is a wonderfully detailed chart of the Pearl Harbor/Honolulu area. It names Diamond Head Waikiki Honolulu with street grid shown and Pearl Lochs later Pearl Harbor and locates numerous landmarks: school windmill leper asylum prison and several areas with heavy surf and breakers. </p><p>The chart appears to be directly derived from a larger separately issued chart of the same title that covered a somewhat larger area Hydrographic Office Chart no. 867. The larger chart was first issued in 1880 and updated at least through 1901. While a very short segment of Oahu R.R. is shown just west of Honolulu on the present chart the much longer stretch of the railway that looped around the northern portion of Pearl Lochs is not shown here as it is on the 1899 edition of the larger map. Since the main portion of the Oahu Railway was completed in late 1889 it suggests that the present map was completed prior to that date. We have been unable to determine the exact publication source of the map. In any case the chart as well as its larger relative is very uncommon; neither version is represented on OCLC. <br /></p><p><b>Condition: </b>Original fold lines. Repair of 1 ½" tear at binding edge. Contemporary presentation photograph album bound in gold cloth stamp-dated 1962 and with blind-embossed titles in Japanese two tassel ties. Spine chipped and partially perished some edge wear and rubbing both bottom corners bumped and partially split. Contents clean and well organized. A tidy annotated presentation album commemorating a trip through Japan by a large group of Shinshu Buddhists from Hawaii in 1962. The photographs are almost all composed with the tour group posed mostly in front of various temples and shrines but also at hotels palaces gardens theaters and other landmarks. The locations begin in Tokyo and proceed to numerous Japanese cities including Nikko Yokohama Hakone Kyoto Koyasan Izumo Hiroshima Yuda Nagasaki Beppu and so forth. The titles on the front cover translate roughly to "Spring Tourism Memorial Hawaii Shinshu Buddhist Tour Group."
