Photograph measuring 3-3/8 x 2-1/4 in. with the ms slip laid down beneath it. A particularly fine example of Emma's photograph and signature in a contemporary frame. She has signed herself "Emma R / September 26 1865."<br /> <br /> Born in Honolulu in 1836 she was adopted by her maternal aunt the chiefess Grace Kamaʻikuʻi Young Rooke and her husband Dr. Thomas C. B. Rooke. She married Kamehameha IV on 19 June 1856. Emma was an active queen concerned with palace affairs and was involved in the expansion of the royal library. She is best known for founding the Queen's Hospital in 1860 which was built to care for native Hawaiians who had no immunity to many of the European diseases which they encountered. The hospital exists to this day as Queen's Medical Center. Her philanthropic endeavours set a precedent for sitting queens.<br /> <br /> Although unattributed this image is likely taken by Andreas Montano the Colombian photographer who came to Hawaii in 1870 and immediately set up a studio at 87 Fort St. He photographed much of Hawaiian royalty and became Emma's official photographer. unknown

There he met Dwight and was eventually housed and tutored by relative Timothy Dwight IV then president at Yale College and a founder of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Today ʻŌpūkahaʻia is best known as one of the first Hawaiians to convert to Christianity and an early translator of the Hawaiian language into English. His desire to become a missionary was among the inspirations for the opening of the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall Connecticut which published this posthumous biography. It was issued with a sermon delivered at ʻŌpūkahaʻia's funeral by Lyan Beecher and three other pieces related to the founding of the Foreign Mission School. OCLC only locates 7 copies and this cataloger has never seen one.Seems to be mainly a promotional book which attempts to tie together the futures of California and Hawaii. The publication date is significant as the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898. It contains a foreword by Hugh Craig President San Francisco Chamber of Commerce regarding U.S. annexation of Hawaii. There is also a lengthy essay starting on p. 101 entitled "What Is and What May Be: Prospective benefits likely to accrue in the near future. Valuable and interesting statistics concerning the commercial relations of California and Hawaii." The last 15 pp. are taken up with biographies of California's most prominent citizens but the bulk of the book is a general history of the state and quite well written and illustrated. N.p. hardcover

An address by Hiram Bingham Jr. on 'the cultivation of the Missionary Spirit' is in the 1857 report. The 1858 report includes an essay by Orramel Gulick on his trip to Micronesia. The president's reports found in almost every issue have continued references to local social and religious interests in Hawaii . The birth marriage and death notices and obituaries of these missionary 'Cousins' found in issue after issue are a major source of information on missionary family histories . In the twenty-fifth annual report 1876 an essay by 'Cousin' General Samuel C. Armstrong discusses his educational work with African Americans at Hampton Virginia ." Forbes. Binding with rubbing but solid and text with usual toning. A very good and stout copy.On pp. 201 to 219 we find one ofd the very earliest accounts of the American Missionaries activities in Hawaii. "On March 30 1820 Hawaii would witness the dawn of Christianity and the most influential religious group in Hawaii. After 164 days of traveling through the United States and sailing through the Pacific Ocean in the Thaddeus fourteen missionaries seven mission couples would arrive in Hawaii landing at Kawaihae and Kailua-Kona Big Island. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions funded these missionaries who were Presbyterians Congregationalists and Dutch Reformists from New England. Before their arrival the kingdom was transforming: King Kamehameha I the monarch who united the Hawaiian islands died and Liholiho Kamehameha II and Queen Kaahumanu co-ruled Hawaii. After reigning for six months they ended the kapu system leaving behind a religious void.In Hawaii the missionaries converted Hawaiian people to the Christian faith developed the written form of Hawaiian discouraged many Hawaiian cultural practices introduced their Western practices and encouraged the spread of English. One of the most powerful converts Queen Kaahumanu embraced Christianity imposed it to the rest of the kingdom and banned Hawaiian religious practices. The missionaries' impact would continue through their descendents who would become the political business and cultural elites of Hawaii and act as a driving force towards Hawaii's Westernization."
