59813c.1865. The image is a little faded but is otherwise in very good condition. Queen Emma of the Sandwich Isles Hawaii born 1836 died 1885 strongly nationalist and also pro-British. She visited England in 1865 and met with Queen Victoria who recorded the occasion in her diary - 'After luncheon I received Queen Emma the widowed Queen of the Sandwich Islands or Hawaii. Met her in the Corridor & nothing could be nicer or more dignified than her manner. She is dark but not more so than an Indian with fine feathers features & splendid soft eyes. She was dressed in just the same widow's weeds as I wear.' Both Queens had lost sons in infancy indeed Victoria had agreed to be godmother by proxy to Emma's son shortly before he died in 1862. This photograph must have been taken on that visit to England in 1865. Nine pinholes through text hard to discern upon first glance else an excellent copy. Baldwin had earlier published a list of Hawaiian mosses and liverworts hepatic plants or Hepaticae in Latin. Malacology In the 1890s he devoted much of his time to studying mollusks malacology specifically the study of Hawaiian land snails some of which he named and described. In addition several land snail species in the family Achatinellidae were named in honor of him as well as a subgenus Baldwinia of the genus Partulina. Second edition first published in 1941; 9 1/4 x 6 1/4; pp. 12 9-86 54; light-brown leatherette over boards printed with Chinese characters in dark-brown; illustrated with frontis plate several photographs and numerous advertisements; small signature of previous owner to ffep; a bit of wear to corners and tips of spine; in very good condition. A great community cook book it was prepared by the Chinese Women's Club of the International Institute to raise funds for national and world support of the Y.W.C.A. In addition to the variety of authentic Cantonese recipes for soups seafood noodles dumplings etc. it also included a section on table etiquette no used chopsticks on the table cloth; no young people are served until the elder persons have received their servings; no one but the honor guest is seated facing the door; etc. The last chapter contained a large table of ingredients identified by their Chinese names their transliterated forms their English equivalent and how they were sold in bulk in bottles in strings and so on. 1880J6SGPBJ1IXLV1880. With 12 albumen prints ranging in size from ca. 16.5 x 23 cm to 21 x 28 cm. Collection of 12 vintage photographs from the late 19th century showing China Indonesia the Hawaiian Islands California and Egypt. Of the 4 photographs of China 2 show Hong Kong including one possibly by the famous Chinese photographer Lai Fong ca. 1839-1890 showing Queen's Road Central. The two rarest photographs show several of the 7500 imperial examination cubicles in Canton Guangzhou while a photograph by A Chan Ya Zhen shows the famous five-story pagoda on Kun Yam Hill in 1870. The Indonesian island Java can be seen on 3 photographs including one of lake Telaga Warna by the British firm Woodbury & Page based in Batavia Jakarta. Taken further to the west were 3 photographs of Hawaii probably all taken in or near Honolulu. A rare undated photograph of the statue of King Kamehameha was taken probably right after the unveiling ceremony in 1883 as it shows a small wooden fence around the statue which can be seen in an illustration in The Graphic 28 April 1883 but is absent from all later images. Of the 2 final images one by Isaiah West Taber 1830-1912 shows Midway Point in Monterey California and the other by Hippolyte Arnoux fl. 1860-1890 a group of Arabs and camels waiting for the ferry near El Qantara in Egypt. Most of the photographs are worn at the edges with small tears and folds and a few have small holes; one of the images of Hawaii with a waterstain at the lower margin. unknown
