The book provides a detailed account of Keopuolani's life from her childhood to her death. It describes her upbringing her marriage to Kamehameha I and her role in the unification of the Hawaiian Islands. The book also discusses her conversion to Christianity and her efforts to spread the faith throughout Hawaii. There he met Dwight and was eventually housed and tutored by relative Timothy Dwight IV then president at Yale College and a founder of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Today ʻŌpūkahaʻia is best known as one of the first Hawaiians to convert to Christianity and an early translator of the Hawaiian language into English. His desire to become a missionary was among the inspirations for the opening of the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall Connecticut which published this posthumous biography. It was issued with a sermon delivered at ʻŌpūkahaʻia's funeral by Lyan Beecher and three other pieces related to the founding of the Foreign Mission School. Perry concluded a TREATY OF AMITY AND FRIENDSHIP with the EMPIRE OF JAPAN."</i></p><p><i>The Friend</i> was the mouthpiece of Congregational missionaries and reported everything from important local Hawaiian issues to international news reprinted from eastern sources. The nine months covered here feature a great deal of the news of the day ranging from war between England and Russia to lots of whaling and maritime news including shipping arrivals and departures the discovery of new sperm whaling grounds naval intelligence all peppered with a liberal dose of good old fashioned conservative proselytizing.</p><p>This particular volume was sent from Sag Harbor New York to Thomas Spencer a Rhode Island sea captain who went native opening a successful ship's chandlery and marrying a local girl.</p> <b>HAWAII.</b>Newspapers. Bound volume of <i>The Friend</i> Honolulu HI containing 22 consecutive issues dated from Feb 1 1854 through Oct 25 1855.<p><br /></p><p>This volume has the first report of the death of Hawaiian King Kamehameha III including the order of procession Jan 1 1855 issue and the first report of the signing of the US-Japan Treaty negotiated by Commander Matthew Perry May 6 1854 issue and an Independence Day celebration July 6 1854 issue.</p><p><b><i>The Friend</i></b> was a local newspaper published from 1843 to 1954. Published by and for the missionaries it is invaluable as a source of information concerning the activities experiences and accomplishments of the 19th-century Congregational missionaries to Hawaii as well as 20th-century figures and the development of the United Church of Christ in Hawaii. Today <i>The Friend</i> is the newsletter of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ.</p><p><b>Thomas Spencer</b> 1815-1884 was a whaling captain out of Warwick Rhode Island. He was stranded in the Sandwich Islands Hawaii and decided to remain there. He opened a very successful ship's chandlery in Honolulu and later purchased property on the "big" island in the village of Hilo. His brothers also joined him in Hawaii. He was a notorious celebrity well-liked by all and especially supportive of the Hawaiian royal family. He is buried in Oahu.</p><p>The children of Thomas Spencer and Makaleka Margaret Robinson were Thomas Spencer Jr. and Charles Lucy Jennie Lily Helen Margaret and Kaliko Spencer.</p>

18803796<p><b>Scarce Chart of Oahu: Pearl Harbor to Diamond Head</b></p><p>This is a wonderfully detailed chart of the Pearl Harbor/Honolulu area. It names Diamond Head Waikiki Honolulu with street grid shown and Pearl Lochs later Pearl Harbor and locates numerous landmarks: school windmill leper asylum prison and several areas with heavy surf and breakers. </p><p>The chart appears to be directly derived from a larger separately issued chart of the same title that covered a somewhat larger area Hydrographic Office Chart no. 867. The larger chart was first issued in 1880 and updated at least through 1901. While a very short segment of Oahu R.R. is shown just west of Honolulu on the present chart the much longer stretch of the railway that looped around the northern portion of Pearl Lochs is not shown here as it is on the 1899 edition of the larger map. Since the main portion of the Oahu Railway was completed in late 1889 it suggests that the present map was completed prior to that date. We have been unable to determine the exact publication source of the map. In any case the chart as well as its larger relative is very uncommon; neither version is represented on OCLC. <br /></p><p><b>Condition: </b>Original fold lines. Repair of 1 ½" tear at binding edge.
